Coupling effects of strain rate and fatigue damage on wheel-rail contact behaviour: a dynamic finite element simulation

Xiongfei Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive 3-D explicit finite element model was established to investigate the frictional wheel-rail rolling contact responses. The strain rate effect and initial fatigue damage of wheel/rail materials were considered, and four friction exploitation levels were included to examine the dynamic contact responses.

Dynamic response of multilayer curved aluminum honeycomb sandwich beams under low-velocity impact

Jianxun Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic response of multilayer curved aluminum honeycomb sandwich beams under low-velocity impact. The deformation process and final failure modes are observed and analyzed. Numerical calculations are performed and show good agreement with experimental results. The effects of core thickness, core-thickness gradient, and gradient of inscribed circle diameters on the load-carrying capacity and energy absorption of multilayer curved aluminum honeycomb sandwich beams are explored. The results suggest that adjusting the core thickness and curvature angle can effectively improve the energy absorption capacity and mitigation ability.

Crashworthiness of bamboo-inspired circular tubes used for the energy absorber of rail vehicles

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: A new type of thin-walled circular tube (BT) inspired by bamboo was proposed and designed for potential application as an energy absorber in rail vehicles. Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the axial crushing behavior and crashworthiness of BT, compared with single CT and foam-filled tube (FT). The results showed that BT exhibited the best load-carrying capability, energy absorption, and crashworthiness among the three types of tubes, with an increase of 93.1% in EA value and an increase from 74.2 kN to 143.4 kN in F-m value compared to CT specimens.

Behaviour of continuous fibre composite sandwich core under low-velocity impact

Sartip Zangana et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing core thickness improved impact capacity, while increasing core height decreased sandwich strength. Finite element analysis simulated the damage status and mechanism of the novel composite core sandwich. The multi-cell composite corrugated core increased impact capacity, and the trapezoidal composite corrugated sandwich core showed higher specific strength compared to traditional honeycomb, truss, and foam cores.

Failure analysis of bio-inspired corrugated sandwich structures fabricated by laser powder bed fusion under three-point bending

Liang Meng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the failure mechanisms and processes of bio-inspired corrugated sandwich structures (BCSS) manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) under three-point bending using theoretical derivation, experimental, and finite element method (FEM). The results showed that panel buckling is the dominant failure mode, while panel yielding or core buckling is the fatal failure mode for structures whose initial failure mode is panel buckling. Furthermore, the experimental and FEM results were in good agreement with analytical predictions.

Experimental study on laminated glass responses of high-speed trains subject to windblown sand particles loading

Gongxun Deng et al.

Summary: The study found that sand impact loading was the main cause of laminated glass damage. Mixed-mode crack initiation and propagation were driven by reflected tensile waves and Rayleigh surface waves under sandstone impacts. Statistical analysis showed that the size of sandstone and impact angle were sensitive to scratch velocity in sand particle impacts.

Impact vibration behavior of railway vehicles: a state-of-the-art overview

Lin Jing et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies on the impact vibration behavior of railway vehicles, categorizing sources of impact excitations, introducing research approaches of vehicle impact vibration, and examining impact vibration response characteristics. The results show that excessive vibrations of railway vehicles induced by dynamic impact loadings have a significant impact on train operating safety and stability, which are difficult to eliminate due to the complexity and diversity of railway lines and service environment.
