Effect of short-term storage on sperm functional parameters in sex-reversed female mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi)

Shuang Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of short-term storage on sperm functional parameters in sex-reversed female mandarin fish, finding that sperm motility could be better preserved in diluted groups. Despite a significant decrease in sperm functional parameters after 5 days, spermatozoa in DS1 showed good performance in terms of motility, membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane integrity, and DNA fragmentation.

Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) Exhibit Wide Variation in Spawning Behavior: An Investigation of Substrate Type, Diel Timing, and Participants

Yi-Jiun Jean Tsai et al.

Summary: Studying cultured populations is crucial for the conservation of imperiled species with limited wild populations. Through laboratory experiments, we found that substrate type and diel timing can influence spawning behavior in cultured delta smelt, with participation in spawning typically involving one female and one or two males.

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) sperm reduction during short-term in vitro storage at 4 °C

Yu Cheng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize a short-term storage protocol for common carp sperm at 4 degrees C under aerobic condition. Results showed that dilution ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 with selected extenders maintained higher sperm function and longer sperm survival. The best sperm quality and quantity were observed in common carp seminal plasma supplemented with 50 mM NaCl and Cejko extender, with or without additional 25 mM KCl/NaCl.

Cryopreservation of masu salmon sperm using glucose-methanol extender and seminal plasma biomarkers related to post-thaw sperm motility

Takafumi Fujimoto et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cryopreservation of masu salmon semen using a specific extender and to investigate the relationship between semen parameters and post-thaw sperm motility. The results showed that the suitability of semen for cryopreservation was affected by the condition of the parental fish.

Cryopreservation of Roughscale Sole (Clidoderma asperrimum) Sperm: Effects of Cryoprotectant, Diluent, Dilution Ratio, and Thawing Temperature

Irfan Zidni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of cryoprotective agent, diluent, dilution ratio, and thawing temperature on the cryopreservation of the endangered roughscale sole fish sperm. The results showed that diluting the sperm with a mixture of 10% dimethyl sulfoxide + Stein's solution at a 1:1 ratio and thawing at 10 degrees Celsius provided the most effective DNA damage prevention.

Effect of double freezing fish semen on sperm motility and fertility

J. Nynca et al.

Summary: Freezing-thawing cycles have been found to preserve sperm motility in different fish species, but with a decrease in motility. Fertilizing ability of rainbow trout sperm did not differ after one freeze-thaw cycle, but significant decreases were recorded after two cycles. Double cryopreservation of fish semen shows potential benefits for preserving endangered fish species and valuable breeding aquaculture individuals.

Some recent data on sperm morphology and motility kinetics in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.)

Sayyed Mohammad Hadi Alavi et al.

Summary: Studying the biology of sperm in Atlantic cod can provide valuable insights for optimizing artificial reproduction and sustainable aquaculture. Investigations into sperm morphology and motility kinetics at different osmolalities revealed variations in sperm characteristics, highlighting the importance of understanding these factors in reproductive technologies.

Characterization of Spawning Behavior in Cultured Delta Smelt

Yi-Jiun Jean Tsai et al.

Summary: This study examined the spawning behavior of cultured Delta Smelt under laboratory settings and identified consistent behaviors associated with egg release. It found that spawning involved two to five fish, occurred at night, and individuals spawned serially within and across nights within a single clutch cycle. The study enhances understanding of Delta Smelt mating system and is informative for conservation efforts.

Validating the use of sodium hypochlorite for egg detachment and photograph-based egg counting in Delta Smelt

Yi-Jiun Jean Tsai et al.

Summary: The study validated the use of diluted sodium hypochlorite solution for detaching Delta Smelt eggs and photograph-based counting for assessing fertilization success. Results showed that in-person pre-exposure egg counting was the least accurate, while post-exposure egg fertilization assessment, particularly through photographs, was more reliable. Exposure to sodium hypochlorite did not affect egg opacity.
