Parallel selection of distinct Tof5 alleles drove the adaptation of cultivated and wild soybean to high latitudes

Lidong Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel locus, Tof5, was identified to promote flowering and enhance adaptation to high latitudes in both wild and cultivated soybean. Different alleles of Tof5 have undergone parallel selection, with Tof5(H1) allele being strongly selected by humans after domestication and Tof5(H2) allele being naturally selected in wild soybean. This study provides insights into the adaptation of wild and cultivated soybean to high latitudes.

Co-silencing E1 and its homologs in an extremely late-maturing soybean cultivar confers super-early maturity and adaptation to high-latitude short-season regions

Liu Li-feng et al.

Summary: In this study, the simultaneous silencing of E1 and E1La/b genes in soybean using RNA interference (RNAi) technology resulted in transgenic plants with early maturity and photoperiod insensitivity traits. This research provides valuable insights into the regulation of flowering time in soybean and potential breeding applications for soybeans adapted to high-latitude short-season regions.

Screening of Soybean Genotypes Based on Root Morphology and Shoot Traits Using the Semi-Hydroponic Phenotyping Platform and Rhizobox Technique

Mohammad Salim et al.

Summary: Root-system architecture is crucial for soybean growth and nutrient uptake. There is significant variation in root and shoot traits among different soybean genotypes. Genotypes with larger root systems exhibit higher harvest index and leaf area, possibly due to increased canopy photosynthesis providing carbon assimilates to the roots. Root traits such as total root length and root:shoot ratio measured in the rhizobox study are strongly correlated with the same traits in the semi-hydroponic system, suggesting their potential as predictive indicators for soybean genotypes.

A functionally divergent SOC1 homolog improves soybean yield and latitudinal adaptation

Kun Kou et al.

Summary: Understanding the genetic basis of soybean adaptation is crucial for breeding and improvement. The SOC1a gene plays a significant role in early flowering and growth habit in soybeans, while SOC1b has weaker effects. SOC1s contribute to floral induction in both leaves and shoot apex through inter-regulation with FTs. Introducing the Tof18(A) allele can improve soybean yield and optimize land use for food production.

Plasticity of root anatomy during domestication of a maize-teosinte derived population

Zhe Chen et al.

Summary: The study identified large genetic variations and plasticity in maize root anatomy during domestication, with multiple QTLs showing consistency with shoot QTL signals. The candidate gene ZmPILS4 plays a potential role in a major QTL for xylem traits, with low expression leading to increased auxin concentration and xylem vessels in roots. Transcriptome and genome-wide association studies revealed the genetic basis of root anatomical plasticity during domestication.

Characterization of Root System Architecture Traits in Diverse Soybean Genotypes Using a Semi-Hydroponic System

Shuo Liu et al.

Summary: Phenotypic variation and correlations among root traits in soybean varieties play a crucial role in plant growth and adaptation strategies. By using a semi-hydroponic system, this study explored the variability in root morphological traits of 171 soybean genotypes, identifying significant positive correlations between root length/mass and shoot mass. The reliability of the semi-hydroponic system in phenotyping root trait variability at the early growth stage in soybean germplasms was validated through consistent rankings of genotypes in important root traits.

Increased copy number of gibberellin 2-oxidase 8 genes reduced trailing growth and shoot length during soybean domestication

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Copy number variations (CNVs) play an important role in crop domestication, particularly in soybeans where a specific CNV region affecting trailing growth and shoot length was identified. This CNV region underwent intense selection during the initial domestication process, demonstrating its significance in soybean adaptation.

Genetic basis and adaptation trajectory of soybean from its temperate origin to tropics

Lidong Dong et al.

Summary: This study reports on the genes Tof16 and the J locus that control soybean yield under short-day conditions, and the loss of their function contributes to soybean's adaptation to tropical regions. Modulating the genetic complexity of LHY homolog alleles can quantitatively improve soybean's maturity and yield traits.

Genetic basis and network underlying synergistic roots and shoots biomass accumulation revealed by genome-wide association studies in rice

Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study identified association signals for root weight, shoot weight, and the ratio of root-to-shoot mass (R/S) in rice, proposing a top-to-bottom model for biomass accumulation. The results also indicated a discrimination of pleiotropy and LD at the sequencing level, supporting a bottom-to-top regulation model for synergistic biomass accumulation. Overall, this sheds light on dissecting the genetic architecture of SBA.
