Failure behavior of the surrounding rock of jointed rock masses in a gold mine under blasting impact disturbance

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of blasting impact disturbances on the stability of surrounding rock masses in jointed rock roadways through in-situ stress measurements and numerical modeling. The results showed that burial depth, impact stress wave peak, and stress wave delay significantly affected the deformation of the surrounding rock.

Macro-Meso Fracture and Instability Behaviors of Hollow-Cylinder Granite Containing Fissures Subjected to Freeze-Thaw-Fatigue Loads

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of freeze-thaw on rock microstructure change and fatigue mechanical behaviors. The results show that rock strength, volumetric strain, and lifetime decrease with increasing freeze-thaw cycles. The stiffness degradation caused by cyclic loads is also impacted by previous freeze-thaw damage. Additionally, the AE ring count and energy count decrease with the increase of freeze-thaw treatment, and large fracture signals are captured for rock that has smaller freeze-thaw cycles.

Summary: Uniaxial compression experiments with acoustic emission (AE) observations were conducted on cross-jointed granite samples to study AE variability and precursory information during sample failure. The analysis revealed that different AE parameters show distinct characteristics and can be used as crucial signal sources for predicting rock failure.

Macro-meso damage cracking and volumetric dilatancy of fault block-in-matrix rocks induced by freeze-thaw-multistage constant amplitude cyclic (F-T-MSCAC) loads

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the mechanical behaviors of an unwelded fault bimrock subjected to freeze-thaw weathering and disturbed stress conditions. The impact of freeze-thaw damage on volumetric deformation, damage propagation, and mesoscopic instability mode was studied. The results showed that block-matrix interface cracking easily occurred after freeze-thaw treatment, and the strain rate increased with the increase of freeze-thaw cycles. An early instability precursor was observed from the evolution of volumetric strain rate. Additionally, a coupled evolution model considering mechanical damage and freeze-thaw weathering damage was defined.

Acoustic emission behavior of rock materials containing two preexisting flaws and an opening subjected to uniaxial compression: insights into self-similarity, chaotic, and fractal features

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the acoustic emission (AE) self-similarity, chaotic, and fractal features and precursory anomalies of the surrounding rock of underground caverns. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on granite specimens with preexisting flaws and an opening. The results show that the self-similarity coefficient can indicate the macroscopic fracture of the sample, and the critical recognition mode before specimen failure follows a declining-minimum value-rising pattern. The entropy values between 0.8 and 1.2 are critical for evaluating the mechanical state of the specimen. The change in the flaw angle affects the curve shape of the three characteristic parameters but does not alter their overall evolution pattern.

Mechanical properties and energy evolution of jointed rock specimens containing an opening under uniaxial loading

Summary: The inclination angle has a significant impact on the mechanical response and energy evolution of granite specimens, with the strength and deformation parameters reaching minimum values at an inclination angle of 45 degrees. The peak total energy, peak elastic strain energy, and peak dissipated energy show nonlinear characteristics with increasing inclination angle.

Rockburst response in hard rock owing to excavation unloading of twin tunnels at great depth

Fan Feng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the rockburst characteristics of hard rock during the excavation unloading of twin circular tunnels under high active stresses. Results show that unloading rates, burial depths, and presence of structural planes between tunnels have significant impacts on the occurrence and severity of rockbursts. Increasing unloading rates intensify failure intensity and dynamic responses, while greater burial depths exacerbate rockburst damage degree. The presence of structural planes between tunnels can have both favorable and unfavorable effects on rock stability, depending on their orientation to the maximum tangential stress.

Cracking mechanism and strength criteria evaluation of granite affected by intermediate principal stresses subjected to unloading stress state

Fan Feng et al.

Summary: Experimental tests on Miluo granite specimens reveal that as the intermediate principal stress σ2 increases, the failure mode shifts from shear to slabbing, exacerbating the extensional cracks. Analyzed through various methods, the peak unloading strength in true-triaxial conditions exhibits an initial increase followed by a decrease with increasing σ2.
