Benzo[a]pyrene in Moscow road dust: pollution levels and health risks

Natalia E. Kosheleva et al.

Summary: This study determined the accumulation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in road dust on different types of roads in Moscow for the first time and found that the BaP content was significantly higher than in surrounding background soils. Large roads and parking lots in courtyards were the most polluted areas, and the parameters of street canyons (such as width and height) also influenced the accumulation of BaP. Oral ingestion was identified as the main pathway for BaP exposure, and adults faced the highest carcinogenic risk in courtyard areas in the city center.

Seasonal, Weekly, and Diurnal Black Carbon in Moscow Megacity Background under Impact of Urban and Regional Sources

Olga Popovicheva et al.

Summary: Moscow megacity has a significant disparity in assessing air quality, leading to severe aerosol pollution. The study investigates the concentrations of black carbon (BC) over different timescales and seasons, revealing seasonal variations and diurnal trends. The source of BC from traffic, heat and power plants, and nearby industries is identified using polar plots. The assessment of contributions from biomass burning, agricultural fires, and wildfires is supported by the spectral dependence of aerosol light attenuation. The impact of air masses from fire-affected regions on urban air pollution is observed during spring and summer.

Overview: Recent advances in the understanding of the northern Eurasian environments and of the urban air quality in China - a Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) programme perspective

Hanna K. Lappalainen et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the results obtained in the northern Eurasian region and urban environments in China over the past 5 years in the context of the PEEX program. The study finds that although scientific knowledge in these regions has increased, there are still limitations and gaps in our understanding of large-scale climate-Earth surface interactions and feedbacks. The lack of coordinated and continuous in situ observations and integrative data analyses hinder a comprehensive system analysis.

Partitioning and solubilities of metals and metalloids in spring rains in Moscow megacity

Dmitry Vlasov et al.

Summary: This study obtained the first dataset on the solubilities and partitioning of metals and metalloids during spring rains in Moscow. It found that there was a 20%-50% increase in solubility in acid rains compared to non-acid rains for certain metals. Anthropogenic sources contributed significantly to the concentration of soluble MMs, while crustal materials were the important contributors for the insoluble MM.

Changes in Observed Daily Precipitation over Global Land Areas since 1950

Steefan Contractor et al.

Summary: This study used a new gridded dataset of daily precipitation to assess climate changes in precipitation at global land locations, finding an overall intensification in precipitation across most land areas globally. The research highlights increases in precipitation intensity in the wet-day distribution, with Asia and the United States showing widespread increases in wet day frequency, and Europe and Australia showing widespread increases in precipitation intensity.

Spatial distribution and sources of potentially toxic elements in road dust and its PM10 fraction of Moscow megacity

Dmitry Vlasov et al.

Summary: The study investigated the contents of PTEs in road dust and its PM10 fraction in Moscow for the first time, finding that PM10 fraction was more polluted compared to bulk samples, with resuspension of roadside soil particles being a significant contributor to the PTEs pollution.

A link between surface air temperature and extreme precipitation over Russia from station and reanalysis data

M. A. Aleshina et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that the relationship between extreme precipitation and temperature is influenced by temperature range, moisture availability, and region. In winter, extreme precipitation increases according to the C-C relationship, while in summer, a peak-like structure is observed, especially for convective precipitation in the southern regions. Extreme precipitation peaks between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, with a decrease in relative humidity at higher temperatures indicating moisture availability as a major factor in the relationship.

What is the role of green stormwater infrastructure in managing extreme precipitation events?

Lauren E. McPhillips et al.

Summary: There are differences in the design of green stormwater infrastructure for small precipitation events and large storm events in the seven cities in the United States. It is crucial to ensure that design guidelines for GSI align with climate change adaptation goals.
