Fault Source Model and Stress Changes of the 2021 MW 7.4 Maduo Earthquake, China, Constrained by InSAR and GPS Measurements

Shunying Hong et al.

Summary: On May 22, 2021, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in Maduo, China, providing valuable information about crustal deformation of the Tibetan plateau. Using radar and GPS data, a fault model was reconstructed, revealing that the earthquake mainly occurred on a northwest-striking major fault with a dip angle of 78 degrees, as well as a minor southeast-striking fault with a dip angle of 64 degrees. This earthquake highlighted intrablock deformation in the Tibetan plateau.

Summary: A multislip-peak sinistral strike-slip earthquake occurred in Maduo County, Qinghai on May 22, 2021, ending a nearly 70-year hiatus of major seismic activity in the central eastern Bayan Har block. This earthquake provides a rare opportunity to study the mechanical properties of the intraplate lithosphere in this region. The analysis revealed the geometry of the fault and its variation along the strike, indicating that the fault can generate large earthquakes and accommodate plate movements.

Coseismic surface ruptures, slip distribution, and 3D seismogenic fault for the 2021 Mw 7.3 Maduo earthquake, central Tibetan Plateau, and its tectonic implications

Junjie Ren et al.

Summary: The 2021 Mw 7.3 Maduo earthquake occurred in the high mountain area of the internal Bayan Har Block in the central Tibetan Plateau. The surface rupture zone was approximately 154 km in length, indicating a dominant left-lateral strike-slip motion. The occurrence of the Maduo earthquake challenges previous models for predicting earthquakes in the block interior. It is necessary to reassess seismic hazard along intra-block faults with low strain rates.

Large-Scale Interseismic Strain Mapping of the NE Tibetan Plateau From Sentinel-1 Interferometry

Summary: The launches of Sentinel-1 satellites in 2014 and 2016 have ushered in a new era of high-resolution velocity and strain rate mapping for the continents. However, there are challenges in tying independently processed data sets to a common reference frame and generating high-resolution strain rate fields. This study analyzes Sentinel-1 data over the northeast Tibetan Plateau and develops new methods to derive east and vertical velocities with high resolution and accuracy. The resulting strain rate fields provide valuable insights into tectonic structures and have wide-ranging research applications.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation mode of the SongpanGanzi terrane (SGT) in central-east Tibet through the analysis of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake. Summary: This study investigates the velocity structure and stress-strain energy distribution in the source region of the 2021 Maduo earthquake. The study reveals a distinct low-velocity anomaly in the mid-lower crust and identifies the role of seismic velocity heterogeneity and weak ductile mid-lower crust in facilitating the nucleation of the earthquake. The findings help to understand the mechanisms of the Maduo earthquake and reconcile the apparent contradiction between large earthquakes and low slip and strain rates.

Overall subshear but locally supershear rupture of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake from high-rate GNSS waveforms and three-dimensional InSAR deformation

Mingzhe Lyu et al.

Summary: On May 21, 2021, a left-lateral earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred in Maduo County, Qinghai province, China. The source kinematics of this event were estimated by analyzing the 1-Hz global navigation satellite system (GNSS) displacement waveforms, GNSS static offsets, and the three-dimensional (3D) co-seismic deformation field from the interfemmetric synthetic radar (InSAR) measurements. The results showed that the earthquake caused surface ruptures with a length of about 160 km and varying strike angles. The earthquake propagated bilaterally, with the majority of the slip occurring to the southeast of the epicenter. The slip reached a depth of approximately 6 km, and the estimated maximum slip was about 5 m. The earthquake had a total duration of about 35 seconds and a total geodetic seismic moment equivalent to a magnitude of 7.4. The analysis also revealed that the earthquake was an overall subshear but locally supershear rupture event. The ground motion caused by the supershear rupture exceeded the building code limits for bridges. The earthquake also increased the stress level of the Maqin-Maqu segment of the East Kunlun Fault and triggered an off-fault aftershock sequence at the northwest end of the earthquake rupture.

Complete three-dimensional coseismic displacements due to the 2021 Maduo earthquake in Qinghai Province, China from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 SAR images

Jihong LIU et al.

Summary: In this study, the three-dimensional coseismic displacements of the earthquake that occurred in Maduo county, Qinghai Province, China were derived using satellite remote sensing data. The results showed that the earthquake was dominated by left-lateral fault slip with a maximum horizontal displacement of up to 2.4 m. The accuracy of the displacement observations was significantly improved using specific methods. In addition, the strain model calculation revealed that the eastern and western parts of the faults experienced more significant strains.

Coseismic and Early Postseismic Slip Models of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo Earthquake (Western China) Estimated by Space-Based Geodetic Data

Lijia He et al.

Summary: The Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake on May 22nd, 2021 in Tibet Plateau activated at least five fault segments with curved geometry and peak coseismic slip of about 5 m. Postseismic slip mainly occurred toward the downdip direction of the main coseismic slip asperities, accounting for approximately 15.3% of the coseismic one. Stress analysis suggests that the nucleation of the Maduo earthquake is partially facilitated by the 1947 M7.7 Dari earthquake.
