Palaeozoic - Early Mesozoic geological history of the Antarctic Peninsula and correlations with Patagonia: Kinematic reconstructions of the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwana

Teal R. Riley et al.

Summary: The Antarctic Peninsula has preserved evidence of a long-lived continental margin with various geological units, suggesting a convergent margin setting from the Cambrian to the Cenozoic. Through the use of geochronology and field evidence, along with detailed kinematic reconstructions, the relationships between geological units and tectonic events in Patagonia and the proto-Antarctic Peninsula have been established. The Gondwana/Pangea continental margin experienced crustal block translation, deformation, magmatic pulses, and development of thick accretionary complexes, which were influenced by subducting slab dynamics.

Thermal history of the southern Antarctic Peninsula during Cenozoic oblique subduction

G. Twinn et al.

Summary: Apatite (U-Th)/He and apatite fission-track thermochronology were used to study the cooling and uplift history of the southern Antarctic Peninsula. The results showed differences in apatite ages and thermal history models between eastern Palmer Land and western Palmer Land/Alexander Island. The study also found evidence of uplift during the Late Cretaceous in eastern Palmer Land, while western Palmer Land and Alexander Island experienced a younger phase of exhumation.

Crustal block origins of the South Scotia Ridge

Teal R. Riley et al.

Summary: The development of the Scotia Sea and opening of Drake Passage in the Cenozoic era happened in a complex tectonic setting, with sea-floor spreading and dispersal of continental fragments. The tectonic setting of the Scotia Sea after the Eocene period is well established, but little is known about the pre-dispersal locations of continental fragments. Detrital zircon analysis of rocks from Bruce Bank indicates a geological continuity with the South Orkney microcontinent and a connection with the Trinity Peninsula Group rocks of the Antarctic Peninsula. Kinematic modelling suggests that Bruce Bank originated from the Antarctic Plate and the South Orkney microcontinent before being translated to the Scotia Plate during the opening of the Scotia Sea.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

Pieter Vermeesch

Summary: In a recent review, nine methods of estimating the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks using detrital geochronology were compared, revealing biases in most methods. The Maximum Likelihood Age (MLA) algorithm, based on a binary mixture of distributions, was found to successfully estimate MDA with less bias than ad hoc methods. This approach has potential applications beyond detrital geochronology.

New Paleomagnetic Constraints on the Cretaceous Tectonic Framework of the Antarctic Peninsula

Liang Gao et al.

Summary: This study presents paleomagnetic data from the South Shetland Islands, providing valuable constraints on the paleoposition of the Western domain of the Antarctic Peninsula. The data suggests that the South Shetland Islands experienced southward translation and rotation during 100-90 Ma, with a direct affinity to the southern Patagonia-Fuegian Andes. The consistent Cretaceous paleomagnetic declination in the Antarctic Peninsula supports an autochthonous continental subduction model, indicating a near-synchronous tectonic-magmatic history between the Antarctic Peninsula and the southern Patagonia-Fuegian Andes.

A revised interpretation of the Chon Aike magmatic province: Active margin origin and implications for the opening of the Weddell Sea

Joaquin Bastias et al.

Summary: The Late Triassic - Jurassic igneous rocks of the Antarctic Peninsula and Patagonia provide evidence for the evolution of the margin of southwestern Gondwana. The study reveals four main magmatic pulses occurring between approximately 225-145 Ma, all consistent with a continental arc setting. This magmatic evolution is driven by active margin processes related to the break-up of Gondwana.
