Recent advances in wearable biosensors for non-invasive monitoring of specific metabolites and electrolytes associated with chronic kidney disease: Performance evaluation and future challenges

Summary: We have developed a wearable device for wireless monitoring of potassium in sweat. The device consists of an all-solidstate ion-selective electrode (ISE) and a miniaturized printed circuit board (PCB) for potentiometric readout and processing. The PCB includes a low-power Wi-Fi interface for transmitting data to a smartphone application, which can calculate potassium concentrations and display the results. The potassium selective ISE has shown good response time and sensitivity, and can be used for point-of-care testing of potassium in artificial sweat. The device is cost-effective and can be easily used by untrained users in daily life.
