Anatomical Classification for Plantaris Tendon Insertion and Its Clinical Implications: A Cadaveric Study

Summary: The study re-examined the topographical anatomy of the fabella or its analogue in late-term fetuses, finding that regardless of its presence, the origins of the PL and GL muscles each had three parts, with PL1, PL2, and PL3 contributing to a thick plantaris. GL1, GL2, and GL3 also had different origins with GL1 and GL2 forming a thick bundle. The authors hypothesized that PL2 and PL3 may be absorbed into GL1 and GL2 during postnatal development, leaving PL1 as the remaining adult plantaris.

Summary: The distribution of Pacinian corpuscles (PCs) in the plantar subcutaneous tissue is not well known. The study found that almost half of the sole PCs were located at the level of the proximal phalanx, especially on the superficial side of the long flexor tendons. Infants' PCs in the sole seem to have a specific function and may play a role in the initial learning of walking.

Summary: The twisted structure of the subtendons of the fetal calcaneal tendon is already visible in the second trimester and is similar to that seen in adults. The internal structure of the calcaneal tendon is formed by subtendons from the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle and the soleus muscle, with the lateral outline formed by subtendons originating from the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle. In most examined limbs, the plantaris tendon is not directly connected to the calcaneal tendon.
