Evaluation of Patient Reported Gastroesophageal Reflux Severity at Baseline and at 1-year After Bariatric Surgery

Anne P. Ehlers et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess patient-reported GERD severity before and after SG and RYGB surgeries. The study found that although some SG patients experienced worsened symptoms after surgery, the majority of patients showed improvement or no change in GERD symptoms. Therefore, using patient-reported outcomes can help guide the choice of procedure in bariatric surgery for GERD patients.

In the eye of the beholder: surgeon variation in intra-operative perceptions of hiatal hernia and reflux outcomes after sleeve gastrectomy

Anne P. Ehlers et al.

Summary: Surgeons who identified hiatal hernias during video review tended to perform concurrent hiatal hernia repairs more often in their practice. However, this was not associated with an improvement in patient-reported reflux symptoms after LSG. Standardizing identification and management of hiatal hernias during bariatric surgery may help improve reflux outcomes post-operatively.

Does Sleeve Gastrectomy Increase the Risk of Barret's Esophagus?

L. Lallemand et al.

Summary: The study highlights the incidence of postoperative GERD and endoscopic lesions following sleeve gastrectomy. While SG is not contraindicated in cases of reflux, patients may require close endoscopic surveillance post-surgery. Some patients also reported a lack of regular medical follow-up after 5 years.

Complications in Bariatric Surgery

Mariano Palermo et al.

Summary: Bariatric surgery, as the most valid option to treat morbid obesity and related comorbid conditions, is underused globally. Inadequate access to medical care, insufficient information from general practitioners, and patients' fear of surgical complications are the main factors limiting the utilization of bariatric surgery.

GERD-A Burning Problem after Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Przemyslaw Znamirowski et al.

Summary: After LSG surgery for obesity, approximately one third of patients develop clinical symptoms of GERD, including heartburn. Endoscopic examination revealed ectopic mucosa lesions in the epicardial part of the esophagus. Microscopic examination showed intestinal metaplasia and Barrett's esophagus in some patients, highlighting the importance of regular endoscopic check-ups.

Reflux After Sleeve Gastrectomy: An Update

Carlos Federico Davrieux et al.

Summary: The study focused on the presence of GERD and its symptoms post-SG, with results showing that symptoms worsen in most obese patients after surgery, and even new symptoms may appear. Conducting thorough preoperative studies and using the correct surgical techniques can help reduce the incidence of GERD.

De novo gastroesophageal reflux disease esophageal surgery in bariatrics: a literature review and analysis of the current treatment options

Summary: With the rise of global obesity, the number of bariatric surgery procedures is increasing. However, bariatric surgery can have postoperative effects such as de novo gastroesophageal reflux disease and upper gastrointestinal motility disorders. Management of de novo GERD should focus on non-surgical, endoluminal, and surgical approaches, with treatment tailored to individual cases.
