Patient Access, Utilization, and Perceptions of Neighborhood and Built Environment Resources

Keeley J. Pratt et al.

Summary: This study surveyed postoperative patients to explore their perceptions of neighborhood and built environment resources, and found that the patients had the highest access to lower-cost national food retailers and fitness facilities. Financial challenges were identified as the major barrier in finding food products to meet patients' goals, while patients expressed a need for better trained staff and facilities in fitness centers. Patients reported highest access to walking/running trails, city parks, and sidewalks for outdoor physical activities.

The role of food and activity environment in a bariatric surgery population: impact on postoperative weight loss

Afton M. Koball et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the impact of environmental food and activity factors on weight loss after bariatric surgery. The results showed that living in a food desert or area with high food insecurity did not significantly impact mean weight loss after surgery. However, healthy food density, fitness facility density, and exercise opportunities had a short-to-medium-term impact on weight loss.
