Endovascular Therapy in Acute Isolated Posterior Cerebral Artery Occlusion Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Ramy Abdelnaby et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the outcomes of iPCAO patients who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT). The results showed that while EVT is feasible and safe in iPCAO, it does not have an outcome benefit compared to best medical treatment.

Acute Treatment of Isolated Posterior Cerebral Artery Occlusion: Single Center Experience

Bruno Cunha et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients with acute isolated posterior cerebral artery occlusion who received mechanical thrombectomy or intravenous thrombolysis. The results showed that mechanical thrombectomy had a higher recanalization rate and improved NIHSS scores in patients. At 3 months, a better functional outcome was observed in the mechanical thrombectomy group. The complication rate was low and there were no cases of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage. These findings support the use of mechanical thrombectomy in patients with isolated posterior cerebral artery occlusion.

Improvements in Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Longitudinal Study in the MR CLEAN Registry

Kars C. J. Compagne et al.

Summary: This study evaluated data from stroke patients in the Netherlands who underwent endovascular treatment, and found that there has been an improvement in treatment time and successful reperfusion rates, leading to better clinical outcomes.

Endovascular therapy versus no endovascular therapy in patients receiving best medical management for acute isolated occlusion of the posterior cerebral artery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Anne Berberich et al.

Summary: The study findings suggest that endovascular therapy (EVT) is a safe and effective treatment for patients with isolated posterior cerebral artery (PCA) occlusion stroke. There were no significant differences in clinical or safety outcomes compared to best medical management (BMM) alone.

Thrombectomy for Primary Distal Posterior Cerebral Artery Occlusion Stroke The TOPMOST Study

Lukas Meyer et al.

Summary: This study suggests that mechanical thrombectomy is a safe and technically feasible treatment option for patients with posterior circulation distal, medium vessel occlusion, compared to standard medical treatment with or without IVT.

Mechanical Thrombectomy in Isolated Occlusion of the Proximal Posterior Cerebral Artery

Christian Herweh et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed patient data from four comprehensive stroke centers in Germany, USA, and Taiwan between 2012 and 2020, and found that EVT in isolated PCAO patients is safe and feasible, with a higher likelihood of early neurological improvement, and clinical outcomes are primarily influenced by the initial stroke severity. Further prospective or randomized studies are needed to better describe the potential long-term clinical benefits of EVT for PCAO compared with best medical management.

European Stroke Organisation (ESO) guidelines on intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke

Eivind Berge et al.

Summary: Intravenous thrombolysis is the approved systemic reperfusion treatment for acute ischaemic stroke patients, with the ESO guidelines providing evidence-based recommendations. The guidelines highlight the importance of timely thrombolysis within 4.5 hours for improving functional outcomes, and recommend its use for specific patient subgroups such as those waking from sleep.
