Phase stability and dense polymorph of the BaCa(CO3)2 barytocalcite carbonate

R. Chulia-Jordan et al.

Summary: The double carbonate BaCa(CO3)(2) is a potentially important compound in the Earth's crust and mantle. A high-pressure phase, named post-barytocalcite, was discovered and its crystal structure and properties were determined. The phase transition from barytocalcite to post-baritocalcite involves changes in unit-cell volume and coordination number. The high-pressure phase of the double carbonate is less stable compared to a mixture of the individual carbonate components.

Crystal Structure of BaCa(CO3)2 Alstonite Carbonate and Its Phase Stability upon Compression

Raquel Chulia-Jordan et al.

Summary: New research reveals that the crystal chemistry of the CaO-BaO-CO2 system is more complex than previously believed, with BaCa(CO3)(2) alstonite structure showing unique characteristics at ambient conditions and high pressures. Under pressure, alstonite undergoes structural changes, transitioning to a monoclinic phase at 9 GPa and experiencing a second phase transition at 24 GPa. These changes result in an increase in the coordination number of Ba atoms. The equation of state of alstonite was determined, and comparisons were made with other carbonates to investigate the relative stability of BaCa(CO3)(2) polymorphs.

Compressibility and Phase Stability of Iron-Rich Ankerite

Raquel Chulia-Jordan et al.

Summary: A joint experimental and computational study was conducted on the structure of naturally occurring iron-rich mineral ankerite. Results showed that the rhombohedral ankerite structure is stable under compression up to 12 GPa, but undergoes a reversible phase transition at 12 GPa possibly due to non-hydrostatic conditions. DFT calculations suggested a novel high-pressure polymorph with Fe and Ca atoms in different coordinations and carbonate groups remaining in a trigonal planar configuration, which could be a candidate structure for dense carbonates in other compositional systems.
