Dolomite-derived composites doped with binary ions for direct solar thermal conversion and stabilized thermochemical energy storage

Shengbin Bai et al.

Summary: By doping divalent iron and manganese ions in dolomite, highly efficient Fe/Mn-doped, acid-modified composites were developed with an optimal molar ratio of Ca/Mg:Mn:Fe=100:2:4. These composites possess high spectral absorptance and excellent cycling stability, making them potential candidates for direct solar absorption in CaL-based TCES systems.

Evaluation of Thermochemical Energy Storage Performance of Fe-/Mn-Doped, Zr-Stabilized, CaO-Based Composites under Different Thermal Energy Storage Modes

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: This study improves the cyclic thermal energy storage/release performance of CaCO3/CaO materials by conducting binary ion doping of Fe/Mn and Zr-based stabilizer incorporation. The synthetic CaO-based composites doped with binary ions of Fe/Mn show greatly increased spectral absorbance compared to pure CaO due to the generation of black Ca2Fe2O s and Ca4Mn3O10. The Zr-doped CaO-based composites exhibit superior cycling stability, especially under CSP-CO2 mode, due to the generation of inert CaZrO3 with desirable antisintering ability. The CaO-based composite with a molar ratio of Ca:Zr=100:6.7 exhibits a remarkably stable energy release density of 1.02 MJ/kg under CSP-CO2 mode, retaining 88.9% of its initial energy release density after 50 cycles.

Albero: An alternative natural material for solar energy storage by the calcium-looping process

Virginia Moreno et al.

Summary: In this study, a calcium-rich calcarenite sedimentary rock called albem was proposed as an alternative to limestone. The reddish material demonstrated a significantly higher solar absorptance compared to limestone. Experimental results showed similar carbonation/calcination performance to limestone, and the material was found to be cost-effective. Simulations indicated that the use of this material would greatly improve the overall CaL-CSP efficiency at an industrial level.
