Efficient Electronic Tunneling Governs Transport in Conducting Polymer-Insulator Blends

Scott T. Keene et al.

Summary: Traditional electronic transport models for conducting polymers focus on conjugated chains and ignore the contributions of nominally insulating components. This study demonstrates that the chemical structure of the non-conductive component has a significant effect on charge carrier mobility. By diluting the conducting polymer with excess insulator, blends with high insulator content can exhibit carrier mobilities comparable to pure conducting polymers. A single, multiscale transport model based on the microstructure of the polymer blends is developed to describe the transport properties for different dilutions. The results reveal that the high carrier mobility in primarily insulator blends is achieved through long-range tunneling mechanism facilitated by aromatic rings.

Impact of varying side chain structure on organic electrochemical transistor performance: a series of oligoethylene glycol-substituted polythiophenes

Shinya E. Chen et al.

Summary: The electrochemical doping/dedoping kinetics and the performance of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) were studied for a series of polythiophene homopolymers. The results showed that OECT materials with more oxygen atoms on the side chains and with the oxygen atom farther from the polymer backbone had better performance. However, replacing the oxygen atom close to the backbone with an alkyl unit increased film conductivity but sacrificed the available doping sites in OECTs. In addition, the study found that the chaotropic anion PF6- facilitated higher doping levels and faster doping kinetics compared to the kosmotropic anion Cl-.

Thermal stability of monolayer WS2 in BEOL conditions

Simona Pace et al.

Summary: The study investigates the thermal stability of monolayer single-crystal WS2 under typical BEOL conditions and finds that it remains stable even after prolonged heating. WS2's thermal stability is maintained even after exposure to low-current electron beam or low-fluence laser, but higher laser fluences lead to photo-activated degradation. These findings are crucial for defining fabrication and monitoring procedures to ensure the quality of WS2 in device fabrication processes.
