Tuning atomically precise metal nanocluster mediated photoelectrocatalysis via a non-conjugated polymer

Bo Tang et al.

Summary: In recent years, metal nanoclusters have shown great potential in solar energy conversion due to their unique atomic stacking arrangements and quantum size effect. However, their short carrier lifetimes and poor stabilities have hindered the development of robust metal nanocluster-based photosystems. In this study, a multilayered photoanode with a highly efficient spatially directional charge transport pathway was designed using positively charged poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride) and tailor-made negatively charged l-glutathione-capped Ag-x nanoclusters. This design achieved enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance under visible light irradiation by reducing charge recombination and prolonging carrier lifetime.

Progressively stimulating carrier motion over transient metal chalcogenide quantum dots towards solar-to-hydrogen conversion

Shi-Cheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The efficiency of solar-to-hydrogen conversion in photocatalytic water splitting relies on multiple electrons accumulation and rapid charge transport/separation. This study demonstrates the construction of 0D-2D nickel-doped and Ti3C2TX MXene-encapsulated transition metal chalcogenide quantum dot/titanium carbide MXene heterostructures. The use of atomic-level foreign metal ion doping and co-catalyst modulation enhances the efficiency of the photocatalyst by broadening the optical absorption range, extending the carrier lifetime, increasing the density of active sites, and promoting charge separation and transfer.

Engineering an Interfacial Facet of S-Scheme Heterojunction for Improved Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by Modulating the Internal Electric Field

Yamin Xi et al.

Summary: Constructing a step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction is a promising route to improve photocatalytic activities by manipulating charge transfer and separation, with interfacial facet engineering playing a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of separation behaviors for powerful redox reactions. The directionality of migration and recombination of charge carriers is greatly accelerated by a stronger built-in electric field and band bending around the interface, leading to more efficient spatial separation for participating in overall redox reactions. It demonstrates significant superiority in photocatalytic H-2 evolution and provides new insights into the rational construction of S-scheme photocatalysts based on interfacial facet design and internal electric field regulation.

Summary: Efficient hierarchical photocatalysts, such as the S-scheme core-shell TiO2@ZnIn2S4 heterojunction, have gained attention for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The improved performance is attributed to the inhibited recombination of photogenerated charge carriers induced by the S-scheme heterojunction, as well as the large specific surface areas and abundant active sites.
