Younger age of stroke in low-middle income countries is related to healthcare access and quality

Mohammad H. Rahbar et al.

Summary: Stroke, the second leading cause of mortality globally, has a higher burden and affects younger individuals in low-middle income countries (LMICs) compared to high-income countries (HICs). It is unclear to what extent differences in healthcare access and quality (HAQ) and prevalence of risk factors contribute to the younger age of stroke in LMICs.

Investigating the Association between Wake-Up Stroke and Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Meta-Analysis

Xin Lu et al.

Summary: The management of wake-up stroke (WUS) is challenging due to uncertain onset time, with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) being a potential risk factor. Meta-analyses found that WUS patients have more severe SDB problems compared to non-WUS patients, suggesting that respiratory events during sleep may underlie the induction of WUS. The induction of WUS was significantly associated with men, emphasizing the importance of early detection and management of potential WUS patients through monitoring SDB status and respiratory effects.

Dyslipidemia and coronary artery calcium: From association to development of a risk-prediction nomogram

Jie-Sian Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between dyslipidemia and coronary artery calcium (CAC) and developed a predictive scoring system for prognostically significant coronary calcification (PSCC). The results showed a significant association between hypertriglyceridemia and prevalent odds of PSCC, suggesting that the proposed predictive model may be a useful screening tool for PSCC.

Weekend catch-up sleep is associated with reduced metabolic derangements in Korean adults

Jin Joo Kim et al.

Summary: Short weekday sleep and insufficient weekend catch-up sleep are independently associated with an increased risk for metabolic derangements, except hypertension. Individuals who do not make up sleep on the weekend are more likely to be obese and have type 2 diabetes or hypercholesterolemia.

Wake-up strokes are linked to obstructive sleep apnea and worse early functional outcome

Tuuli-Maria Haula et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and wake-up stroke (WUS), and found that moderate-to-severe OSA is related to WUS, with WUS patients having worse functional outcomes. Further research is needed to determine if OSA is causally linked to WUS.

A Comprehensive Systematic Review and Meta-analysis on the Risk Factors of Stroke in Iranian Population

Reza Tabrizi et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis on stroke risk factors in the Iranian population revealed associations between stroke risk and factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and opioid addiction. These risk factors are potentially modifiable and preventable, emphasizing the need for LMICs to develop national approaches to address and control them to reduce stroke incidence.
