Dementia detection from brain activity during sleep

Elissa M. Ye et al.

Summary: Dementia is a growing problem in the elderly and is often underdiagnosed. Detecting and classifying dementia early can help improve management of the disease. Changes in brain activity during sleep can be used to identify those at risk of cognitive decline.

The association between obstructive sleep apnea and sleep spindles in middle-aged and older men: a community-based cohort study

Jesse L. Parker et al.

Summary: In this large population-based sample of men, OSA severity measures were independently associated with spindle abnormalities. Further population studies are needed to determine associations between spindle metrics and functional outcomes.

Improvements in cognitive function and quantitative sleep electroencephalogram in obstructive sleep apnea after six months of continuous positive airway pressure treatment

Angela L. D'Rozario et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on cognitive function and sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The results showed that after 6 months of CPAP treatment, cognitive function improved and sleep EEG features were enhanced. These findings suggest that the cognitive deficits and altered brain electrophysiology observed in untreated OSA can be reversed with treatment.
