Influence of Immune Cell Subtypes on Mitochondrial Measurements in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells From Children with Sepsis

Scott L. Weiss et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate how changes in immune cell composition affect PBMC mitochondrial respiration and content in children with and without sepsis. The results showed that PBMC mitochondrial measurements varied with changes in immune cell composition in both groups, but the differences between sepsis patients and controls were partly due to the effects of sepsis itself rather than solely an epiphenomena of variable immune cell composition.

Pancreatic Stone Protein Predicts Sepsis in Severely Burned Patients Irrespective of Trauma Severity A Monocentric Observational Study

Holger Jan Klein et al.

Summary: PSP shows potential as a powerful diagnostic and prognostic marker in differentiating septic and nonseptic patients during acute burn care, with the ability to identify infection and sepsis early on and potentially reduce mortality and costs through timely treatment initiation.

Review of Sepsis in Burn Patients in 2020

Summary: Severe burn injuries can increase the risk of sepsis in patients due to damage to the skin barrier and the pathophysiology of burns mimicking sepsis. Early and effective diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing sepsis in burn patients.

An Assessment of Research Priorities to Dampen the Pendulum Swing of Burn Resuscitation

Summary: Research on the pathophysiology of burn shock has improved resuscitation therapy, with fluid resuscitation shown to increase survival rates for severe thermal injury patients. However, challenges remain in how to further improve resuscitation practices to reduce edema and volume overload-related complications.

Procalcitonin kinetics early after severe burn injury and its value in diagnosis of sepsis

Jianglin Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical significance of PCT kinetics in major burn patients, showing that early PCT kinetics is a prognostic factor for sepsis and mortality, while PCT concentration can be a diagnostic biomarker for sepsis in major burn patients. PCT kinetics demonstrated better accuracy in discriminating Gram-positive sepsis compared to PCT concentration.

Incidence and Time Point of Sepsis Detection as Related to Different Sepsis Definitions in Severely Burned Patients and Their Accompanying Time Course of Pro-Inflammatory Biomarkers

Pia Niggemann et al.

Summary: The diagnosis of sepsis in burn patients is challenging due to the lack of a clear consensus on the definition of sepsis. This study compared the incidence and time course of septic events according to different definitions in burn patients, showing that the Sepsis-3 definition identified sepsis earlier than other definitions. Pro-inflammatory biomarkers, especially PSP, could play a role in diagnosing sepsis in burn patients.
