Infectious Diseases Society of America Position Paper: Recommended Revisions to the National Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock Early Management Bundle (SEP-1) Sepsis Quality Measure

Chanu Rhee et al.

Summary: The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is concerned about the potential for antibiotic overuse due to the SEP-1 measure and has outlined recommendations to limit its application to patients with septic shock. The IDSA believes that managing possible sepsis without shock should be guided by more appropriate guidelines that allow for individualized patient care.

Understanding critically ill sepsis patients with normal serum lactate levels: results from US and European ICU cohorts

Christopher M. Sauer et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with normal serum lactate levels had lower mortality rates compared to those with high levels, despite similar physiologic phenotypes. Future research should confirm these findings and establish the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

A comparison of different scores for diagnosis and mortality prediction of adults with sepsis in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Bayode R. Adegbite et al.

Summary: The study found that the performances of qSOFA, SIRS, MEWS, and UVA scores in Low- and Middle-Income Countries varied for diagnosing and predicting mortality in patients with suspected infection. Some scores showed good performance while others were poor. Future studies should explore combining or modifying elements from different scores.

Coagulation phenotypes in sepsis and effects of recombinant human thrombomodulin: an analysis of three multicentre observational studies

Daisuke Kudo et al.

Summary: We identified four sepsis phenotypes based on coagulation markers. The treatment effects of thrombomodulin varied across different sepsis phenotypes. This discovery will facilitate future trials of thrombomodulin targeting specific sepsis phenotypes with high FDP and D-dimer levels.
