Highly Efficient Oxygen-Activated Self-Cleaning Membranes Prepared by Grafting a Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Catalyst

Botao Fan et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient oxygen-activated self-cleaning membrane was successfully prepared. The results showed that an increase in pore features and surface roughness enhanced the permeate flux, while an enhanced adsorption capacity and surface hydrophobicity improved the membrane removal efficiency. The self-cleaning mechanism was achieved by activating dissolved oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for organic pollutant degradation. The study also integrated catalytic oxidation with membrane separation to prevent fouling, providing a new direction for multifunctional membrane development.

Atomically-thin Schottky-like photo-electrocatalytic cross-flow membrane reactors for ultrafast remediation of persistent organic pollutants

Priyanka Kumari et al.

Summary: The remediation of persistent organic pollutants in surface and ground water is a global environmental challenge. Conventional physico-chemical techniques are not efficient in removing such pollutants, thus requiring new remediation techniques. This study developed photo-electro catalytic membranes that combine photocatalytic and electrocatalytic degradation of contaminants with molecular sieving. The membranes exhibited enhanced hydrophilicity and electro-chemical properties, resulting in increased photocurrent efficiency and degradation kinetic factors compared to photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. The strategy of using these membranes offers great potential in designing stimuli-responsive materials for simultaneous sieving and degradation of toxic contaminants.

Hydrodynamically induced helical particle drift due to patterned surfaces

Danielle L. Chase et al.

Summary: Advances in microfabrication have enabled the customization of surfaces for optimal sorting, mixing, and focusing of complex particulate suspensions in microfluidic devices. Research has shown that corrugated surfaces can manipulate particle motion effectively, with experiments and theoretical predictions revealing three-dimensional helical particle trajectories along corrugations. The interaction of disturbance flows induced by particle motion with the corrugations generates a locally transverse anisotropy of the pressure field, explaining the helical dynamics and particle drift near patterned surfaces.
