Synthesizing and characterizing Fe3O4 embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar as a persulfate activator for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar (Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC) was prepared and showed excellent capacity in activating persulfate for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A direct electron transfer regime involving surface-bound metastable complexes was found to play a decisive role in the Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC800/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The differences in degradation performances and activation regimes were attributed to the surface hydroxyl groups of carbon-based catalysts and the structure discrepancies between PMS and PDS.

Mengxue Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the origins of selectivity in single-atom catalysts (SACs) based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems were investigated using experimental and theoretical approaches. The results showed that pollutants with high redox potential were primarily degraded by free radicals, while pollutants with low redox potential were predominantly degraded through the nonradical electron transfer pathway (ETP). Furthermore, the contribution of radical and nonradical pathways could be controlled by the loading of PMS.

Summary: This study reports the catalyst-free activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) via visible light for the removal of fluoroquinolones (FQs). The mechanism of PDS activation by the excited triplet state of FQs ((3)FQs*) is proposed. Experimental results show that PDS can generate more ·OH in the presence of (3)FQs*. Both radical and non-radical oxidation reactions contribute to the degradation of FQs in the system. QTOF analysis and DFT calculations clarify the degradation pathways and reactive sites.
