Role of hydrocyclone separator on the formation and separation of aerobic granular sludge: Evaluating granulation efficiency and simulating hydrodynamic behavior

Du Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application of a hydrocyclone separator in the field of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). The granulating and granular separation efficiencies of the hydrocyclone separator were studied through experiments and simulations. The results showed that the hydrocyclone separator significantly reduced the suspended sludge in the mixed liquid, improved sludge settling performance, and reduced SVI. The optimal granular separation efficiency was achieved at a specific water velocity. Additionally, the use of carrier particles with larger particle size was suggested to enhance AGS formation.

Investigation of mini-hydrocyclone performance in removing small-size microplastics

Liqun He et al.

Summary: This study presents the effectiveness of mini-hydrocyclones in removing small-size microplastics and evaluates the removal performance of hydrocyclones with different diameters. The results show that mini-hydrocyclones can effectively remove small-size microplastics, and the flow characteristics play an important role in the removal efficiency.

Effect of particle concentration on turbulent modulation inside hydrocyclone using coupled MPPIC-VOF method

Mayank Kumar et al.

Summary: This study discusses the implementation of a coupled Multi-phase particle in cell method and Volume of Fluid flow solver to simulate particles in a fluid flow field with a free surface. By testing multiple sub-grid scale models, it was found that the dynamic k-equation model has the best-predicting capability for the mean and turbulent flow field. The study shows that even with low solid concentration, the fluctuating flow field increases substantially with varying particle concentration.

Purification of granular sediments from wastewater using a novel hydrocyclone

Feng Li et al.

Summary: A novel hydrocyclone with bi-symmetrical involue inlet, thick-wall overflow pipes and conical segment structure was designed and compared with other hydrocyclones. Numerical analysis showed that the flow field in the novel hydrocyclone is more stable, resulting in a significant increase in impurity removal efficiency. The tangential velocity, the axial velocity and the pressure also increased significantly when using the novel hydrocyclone, leading to a reduced number of dislocated particles and enhanced recovery ratio of fine particles.

Separation and enrichment of nanoplastics in environmental water samples via ultracentrifugation

Huiwen Cai et al.

Summary: A new method for separating and enriching nanoplastics was developed, successfully isolating and enriching polystyrene fragments with a high recovery rate. Characterization of particles using UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM, and HSI allows for evaluation of plastic concentration, morphology, and polymer type.
