Inorganic anions influenced the photoaging kinetics and mechanism of polystyrene microplastic under the simulated sunlight: Role of reactive radical species

Kecheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study systematically explored the photoaging process of polystyrene microplastic (PS-MP) in the presence of commonly-found inorganic anions. It was found that the addition of these ions led to significant changes in the morphology, functional groups, and molecular weight of the photoaging PS-MP. The photoaging process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the photoaging rate constant was calculated to be higher in the presence of inorganic anions compared to ultrapure water. Indirect photolysis, involving the formation of reactive radical species, was identified as the main mechanism of PS-MP photo-transformation.

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: This study synthesized perylenetetracarboxylic acid nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1.5 nm and demonstrated their activity as highly efficient hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased the internal electric fields, promoting charge-carrier separation, and weakened charge-carrier recombination by migrating photogenerated electrons and holes to the edge and plane, respectively. Furthermore, the reduction potential and hydrophilic sites of perylenetetracarboxylic acid were enhanced. This work provides a strategy for designing future efficient photocatalysts.

Advantageous roles of phosphate decorated octahedral CeO2 {111}/g-C3N4 in boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction: Charge transfer bridge and Lewis basic site

Wanqin Li et al.

Summary: The P-CeO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst coupling phosphate modified octahedral CeO2 {111} surface with gC(3)N(4) showed superior CO2 reduction activity due to efficient charge transfer and increased oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. The interfacial electrons donated from g-C3N4 to CeO2 through the PO43- bridge led to Z-scheme formation, facilitating rapid photo-generated charge transfer and CO2 activation. This synergistic interaction of charge-transfer channel and abundant active sites makes P-CeO2/g-C3N4 a potential photocatalyst for CO2 reduction.
