Negatively Charged Sulfur Quantum Dots for Treatment of Drug-Resistant Pathogenic Bacterial Infections

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: The study engineered negatively charged sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) as an efficient broad-spectrum antibiotic to kill drug-resistant bacteria in vitro and in vivo. SQDs destroy bacterial membrane systems and affect their metabolism through the intrinsic antibacterial activity of elemental sulfur and catalytic generation of reactive oxygen species. Compared to traditional positively charged materials, SQDs demonstrate better hemocompatibility and lower toxicity.

Polyvinyl Alcohol Enhanced Fluorescent Sulfur Quantum Dots for Highly Sensitive Detection of Fe3+ and Temperature in Cells

Jiehao Lei et al.

Summary: Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) have attracted attention for their unique properties and potential applications. A simple method was used to prepare water-dispersible and stable SQDs, which showed sensitive and selective fluorescence quenching towards Fe3+ and could potentially serve as a nanothermometer. This work opens new opportunities for expanding the application fields of SQDs.

Early-warning and semi-quantitative colorimetric detection of Hg(II) with lysine-bis-Schiff base cellulose membranes designed by simple interfacial covalent bonding

Heng Zhang et al.

Summary: Efficient platforms for the detection of hypertoxic Hg2+ in water are of great significance. In this study, lysine-bis-Schiff base cellulose membranes (SCMs) were prepared as immobilized probe colorimetric platforms, offering an effective solution for early-warning detection of Hg2+. The SCMs exhibited high selectivity, sensitivity, and robust reusability in detecting Hg2+ qualitatively and semi-quantitatively within a short period of time.

One-pot synthesis of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin capped fluorescent sulfur quantum dots for highly sensitive and selective recognition of tartrazine

Zeming Huang et al.

Summary: A robust fluorescent sulfur quantum dots material, utilizing hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin as ligand, has been developed with molecular recognition and fluorescence detection capability, displaying fine aqueous dispersibility, stable and tunable fluorescence, and favorable biocompatibility for applications in cellular imaging and sensing. The SQDs, benefiting from the synergistic effect of inner filter effect and host-guest interaction, can serve as an effective fluorescent probe for tartrazine detection with excellent sensitivity and selectivity, showing a limit of detection of 82 nM and a wide linear range of 0 to 30 µM. Moreover, the fluorescent SQDs have demonstrated successful detection of tartrazine in river water and food samples with satisfactory performance.

Sulfur Quantum Dots as Fillers in Gelatin/Agar-Based Functional Food Packaging Films

Ruchir Priyadarshi et al.

Summary: Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) show potential as functional fillers for food packaging biopolymer films, with good dispersibility, high antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, and low toxicity to cells. Adding SQDs to gelatin/agar blend films can enhance the UV-barrier property without compromising the color and transparency of the film.

Photoinduced Self-Assembly of Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots

Zheng Xing et al.

Summary: The study reports on a unique irradiation-triggered self-assembly and recrystallization phenomenon of crystalline carbon nitride quantum dots. Unlike conventional self-assembly of nanocrystals into ordered superstructures, this photoinduced self-assembly resembles a click reaction process of macromolecules, initiated by activated functional groups along the perimeters.

Photoluminescence investigations of sulfur quantum dots synthesized by a bubbling-assisted strategy

Shuo Liu et al.

Summary: Sulfur quantum dots (S-dots) are considered promising luminescent materials due to their simple synthesis, excellent luminescence properties, and metal-free nature, making them attractive for optoelectronic and electroluminescence applications. The emission color of S-dots is size-dependent, explained by the quantum confinement effect. The dots' luminescent quantum efficiency is strongly affected by the surface sulfur species.
