Field-Effect Transistor with a Plasmonic Fiber Optic Gate Electrode as a Multivariable Biosensor Device

Roger Hasler et al.

Summary: A novel multivariable system that combines a transistor with fiber optic-based surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy has been developed. The system allows for discrimination of mass and charge contributions for binding assays on the same sensor surface. The sensor geometry has been optimized and the reversibility of plasmon resonance wavelength shifts has been demonstrated. The system was successfully tested with a layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolytes and a thrombin binding assay.

Recent advances and challenges of biosensing in point-of-care molecular diagnosis

Hongwei Chu et al.

Summary: The molecular diagnosis has attracted more attention in infectious disease screening with successful understanding of the human genome, especially in light of the recent COVID-19 outbreak. Point-of-care testing (POCT) can expand the application of molecular diagnosis due to its rapid reply, low cost, and ability to work in decentralized environments, which has led many researchers and commercial institutions to focus on POCT-based biosensing for molecular diagnosis.

Transcription-Based Amplified Colorimetric Thrombin Sensor Using Non-Crosslinking Aggregation of DNA-Modified Gold Nanoparticles

Yu Muto et al.

Summary: The study presented a AuNP-based signal-amplifying sandwich biosensor for detecting target molecules without the need for conformational changes in ligands. Thrombin was used as a model target, triggering an extension reaction via hybridization of two probes and subsequently RNA synthesis initiation. The amplified RNA drives aggregation or dispersion of the AuNPs, leading to observable color differences in the solution. This detection system can be universally applied to a wide range of ligands due to its ligand-independent design.

A trigger-based aggregation of aptamer-functionalized gold nanoparticles for colorimetry: An example on detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7

Yuanyang Xie et al.

Summary: A pH-triggered colorimetric assay using aptamer anchored gold nanoparticles has been developed to detect E. coli O157:H7. The movement of HS-Apt@AuNPs in different solvents triggers different responses due to the pH effect and aptamer's capturing ability, leading to changes in colorimetric signals. This pH-dependent trigger method provides flexibility in design for gold nanoparticle-based biosensing assays, showing great potential for highly sensitive bacterial sensors in public health defense.
