Paper-based electrochemical sensor for on-site detection of the sulphur mustard

Noemi Colozza et al.

Summary: A novel paper-based electrochemical sensor was developed for on-site detection of sulphur mustards, which combines office paper with choline oxidase enzyme for sustainable sensing. The sensor relies on measuring the inhibition degree of choline oxidase by sulphur mustards to detect the mustard agent, and a nanocomposite was used to improve the electroanalytical performances. The sensor successfully detected a sulphur mustard with a detection limit in the millimolar range and can be applied for fast and cost-effective detection of sulphur mustards with portable instrumentation.

Green MIP-202(Zr) Catalyst: Degradation and Thermally Robust Biomimetic Sensing of Nerve Agents

Samar S. Sandhu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new, green, thermally stable, and biocompatible zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) catalyst for rapid and efficient detection of nerve agent threats. The catalytic degradation of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) by the MIP-202(Zr) catalyst showed exceptional performance at near-neutral pH, as validated by various analytical techniques. The MIP-202(Zr)/F-ISE sensor demonstrated high thermal and storage stability, paving the way for remote or wearable field detection of G-type nerve agents in real-world environments.

Chemical targets to deactivate biological and chemical toxins using surfaces and fabrics

Christia R. Jabbour et al.

Summary: To prepare for the next global threat, it is crucial to develop environments where infectious diseases and dangerous chemicals cannot be easily spread or misused, especially for those in high exposure situations who need adequate protection. Recent studies have shown that the use of metal and metal-oxide catalysts, as well as metal-organic frameworks, can help accelerate the inactivation of biological and chemical toxins.

Effective degradation of sulfur mustard simulant using novel sulfur-doped mesoporous zinc oxide under ambient conditions

Eunike Mahayoni et al.

Summary: In this study, sulfur-doped metal oxides were synthesized and tested for their catalytic activity in the degradation of mustard gas simulant 2CEES. The sulfur-doped mesoporous zinc oxide showed higher catalytic activity, potentially due to the involvement of cyclic sulfonium ion intermediate reaction. Optimizing the sulfur content in the catalyst layer was found to enhance the degradation efficiency of 2CEES.
