Navigation Grade MEMS IMU for A Satellite

Wanliang Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a navigation grade MEMS IMU that was successfully applied in the Lobster-Eye X-ray Satellite, achieving outstanding precision through a redundant configuration of six-axis MEMS gyroscopes and customized self-calibration parameters. The in-orbit measured data showed precision better than 0.02 degrees/h (1 sigma), making it the highest precision MEMS IMU for commercial aerospace use reported to date.

40 years of sensor fusion for orientation tracking via magnetic and inertial measurement units: Methods, lessons learned, and future challenges

Milad Nazarahari et al.

Summary: Technological advancements in the past two decades have led to the development of more accurate and lightweight MIMUs for extensive applications, specifically in tracking 3D orientation. Research efforts have focused on addressing uncertainties in measurements and developing sensor fusion algorithms to accurately estimate orientation. Early SFAs were vector observation algorithms or extended Kalman filters, while recent works have introduced complementary filter structures for computational efficiency. Various modifications have been proposed to improve SFA performance, such as adaptive gain tuning and imperfect measurement rejection. Benchmarking studies are identified as the current main challenge. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of different SFAs for orientation tracking with MIMUs.

An IMU-Based Real-Time Measuring System for Acetabular Prosthesis Implant Angles in THR Surgeries

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: With the aging population, the number of total hip replacement surgeries is increasing. In order to improve the success rate of surgery, an inertial measurement unit based real-time measurement system has been designed to accurately measure acetabular prosthesis angles and track real-time prosthesis location. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in accurately measuring and tracking prosthesis dislocation during THR surgeries.

Is in vivo sensing in a total hip replacement a possibility? A review on past systems and future challenges

O. G. Vickers et al.

Summary: Surgery for total hip replacement is successful but complications can arise. Smart implants are widely used in healthcare but not yet in THR. Researchers need to address challenges such as sensing methods, biocompatibility, integration, power supply, communication, and regulation for in vivo sensing within a THR.
