Auditory Virtual Reality for Insect Phonotaxis

Noriyasu Ando et al.

Summary: The study developed an auditory virtual reality system for studying auditory navigation in crickets, demonstrating that tethered female crickets selectively responded to conspecific male calling song and localized the sound source in a virtual arena. Further combinations of the system with neurophysiological techniques will help understand the neural mechanisms for insect auditory navigation.

Multisensory-motor integration in olfactory navigation of silkmoth, Bombyx mori, using virtual reality system

Mayu Yamada et al.

Summary: Animals survive and thrive through navigational behavior by integrating information obtained from multisensory inputs. In this study, the adult silkmoth was investigated on how it integrates visual and wind direction information during female search behavior using a virtual reality system. Results showed that correct odor, vision, and wind information lead to the highest navigational success rate for the silkmoth, with a reduction in success rate when wind direction information differs from the actual direction detected. This modulation of behavior based on multisensory information is crucial for navigation success.
