A novel ZrNbMoTaW refractory high-entropy alloy with in-situ forming heterogeneous structure

Tianxin Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully enhanced the room-temperature mechanical properties of NbMoTaW-based RHEAs by designing and preparing a series of cast ZrxNbMoTaW alloys, with the Zr1 alloy showing superior strength and plasticity at both room temperature and high temperature. The heterogeneous structure in the Zr1 alloy, induced by factors such as increased mixing enthalpy, severe lattice distortion, and non-equilibrium solidification, contributed to the improvement of strength and plasticity.

Local chemical fluctuation mediated ductility in body-centered-cubic high-entropy alloys

Yeqiang Bu et al.

Summary: This study captured the dynamic interaction between LCFs and dislocations in ductile BCC HfNbTiZr HEAs, demonstrating how LCFs influence strength and ductility by promoting dislocation interaction. The observed double cross-slips caused by LCFs homogenously distribute dislocations onto various atomic planes, contributing to ductilization in HfNbTiZr. These findings offer insights into the deformation mechanisms of HEAs and suggest new strategies for designing ductile BCC HEAs.

Chemical short range order strengthening in BCC complex concentrated alloys

E. Antillon et al.

Summary: Atomistic methods were used to anneal two BCC chemically complex alloys to evaluate the effect of chemical short-range order on alloy strength. It was found that annealing led to a softening of the BCC quaternary alloy but had minimal effect on solid solution strengthening in the ternary alloy. Results were modeled using an extension of the Suzuki model of substitutional solid solution strengthening, with good agreement between the model results and direct atomistic simulation data.

Relative mobility of screw versus edge dislocations controls the ductile-to-brittle transition in metals

Yan Lu et al.

Summary: Body-centered cubic metals exhibit a ductile-to-brittle transition at a critical temperature, controlled by the ratio of screw dislocation velocity to edge dislocation velocity. A physical model shows the importance of coordinated movement of screw and edge dislocation segments for sustaining dislocation multiplication. High relative mobility is crucial for the transition of dislocation sources from disposable to regeneratable ones.

Rajeshwar R. Eleti et al.

Summary: Investigated the plastic deformation and rate-controlling mechanism during tensile deformation of various body-centered cubic (BCC) medium/high-entropy alloys (MEAs/HEAs) at 300 K, revealing screw dislocation motion overcoming the Peierls-Nabarro stress barrier as the rate-controlling mechanism, with the activation volume (V*) found inversely proportional to the yield strength.

Strength can be controlled by edge dislocations in refractory high-entropy alloys

Chanho Lee et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the high strength of some new high-entropy alloys based on refractory elements at high temperatures is mainly attributed to edge dislocations, rather than traditional screw dislocations. Researchers have used this insight to identify over 10^6 possible ultra-strong high-temperature alloy compositions for future exploration.

Atomistic simulations of dislocation mobility in refractory high-entropy alloys and the effect of chemical short-range order

Sheng Yin et al.

Summary: The presence of short-range order influences the mobility of dislocations in high-entropy alloys, with edge dislocations being enhanced and double-kink nucleation in screw dislocations being reduced. A cross-slip locking mechanism is observed for the motion of screws, providing extra strengthening for refractory high-entropy alloy system.
