In Situ TEM tensile testing of bicrystals with tailored misorientation angles

Mehrdad T. Kiani et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries in metals and alloys have complex structural features that affect their mechanical behavior. This study used bicrystal Au thin films to investigate deformation at a single grain boundary and found that the misorientation angle of the grain boundary has minimal influence.

Influence of symmetrical 1010 high-angle tilt grain boundaries on the local mechanical properties of magnesium bicrystals

J. -E. Brandenburg et al.

Summary: The study used nanoindentation to investigate the local mechanical properties near 1010 tilt grain boundaries in magnesium bicrystals with different misorientation angles. It was found that critical shear-stress for the second pop-in differed substantially for grain boundaries with different structures, indicating important mechanical property variations in these boundaries.

Effects of Grain Boundary Geometry and Boron Addition on the Local Mechanical Behavior of Interstitial-Free (IF) Steels

Kazuki Endoh et al.

Summary: Nanoindentation measurements were conducted on various grain boundaries to investigate the effects of neighboring grain geometry and boron addition on plasticity resistance in IF steels. It was found that the geometric compatibility factor of the grain boundaries did not affect plasticity resistance, but the addition of boron increased resistance due to boron and titanium segregation. This segregation was shown to enhance resistance to plastic deformation near the grain boundaries.

Direct Characterization of the Relation between the Mechanical Response and Microstructure Evolution in Aluminum by Transmission Electron Microscopy In Situ Straining

Summary: Transmission electron microscopy in situ straining experiments were performed on Al single crystals with different initial lattice defect densities, revealing differences in dislocation motion and patterns under different conditions. Microyielding and dislocation avalanche during microplasticity were identified as fundamental steps of macroplastic deformation.
