Transcriptome and co-expression network analyses provide insights into fruit shading that enhances carotenoid accumulation in pomelo ( Citrus grandis )

Qihang Jiang et al.

Summary: Bagging treatment enhances the accumulation of carotenoids, especially lycopene, in the pulp of pomelo fruit. Upregulation of PSY and downregulation of CCD1 gene expression directly contribute to the increase in carotenoid content. Thirteen candidate genes closely associated with lycopene accumulation were identified through RNA-seq and WGCNA analysis, and their regulatory mechanism on carotenoid pathway genes was discussed. Additionally, these candidate genes may indirectly influence carotenoid enhancement in the pulp through the regulation of phytohormones, primary metabolism, and stress responses.

A Citrus Phosphate Starvation Response Factor CsPHL3 Negatively Regulates Carotenoid Metabolism

Suwen Lu et al.

Summary: CsPHL3 is identified as a Pi starvation response factor that negatively regulates carotenoid metabolism by modulating the expression of carotenogenic genes. Overexpression of CsPHL3 results in abnormal growth of plants, suggesting its involvement in regulating plant growth and phosphate signaling.

A fruit ripening-associated transcription factor CsMADS5 positively regulates carotenoid biosynthesis in citrus

Suwen Lu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that a MADS gene CsMADS5 in citrus positively regulates carotenoid biosynthesis by directly activating carotenogenic genes, leading to enhanced fruit coloration and carotenoid concentrations. Additionally, CsMADS5 physically interacts with another positive regulator CsMADS6, suggesting a collaborative role in promoting carotenoid accumulation. These findings expand our knowledge of the complex transcriptional regulatory network governing carotenoid biosynthesis during fruit ripening.

Red light-induced kumquat fruit coloration is attributable to increased carotenoid metabolism regulated by FcrNAC22

Jinli Gong et al.

Summary: Carotenoids play vital roles in fruit coloration, with red light inducing accelerated degreening and carotenoid accumulation in kumquat fruits through the specific induction of a NAC transcription factor, FcrNAC22. FcrNAC22 activates key carotenoid metabolic genes and enhances color change in citrus and tomato fruits, mediating red light-induced fruit coloration.

Evaluation of Carotenoids Accumulation and Biosynthesis in Two Genotypes of Pomelo (Citrus maxima) during Early Fruit Development

Yihan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the carotenoid profiles and gene expression patterns in two genotypes of pomelo during early fruit development, finding that honey pomelo had higher carotenoid content, primarily lutein, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene. The accumulation of carotenoids in honey pomelo was related to the transcriptional regulation of ZISO and LUT5, while in golden pomelo, the rate-limiting genes were PDS and ZDS. This research provides insights into the regulatory mechanisms of carotenoid accumulation and suggests directions for utilizing young pomelo fruits effectively.
