Integrated groundwater management using a comprehensive conceptual framework

Mahsa Malmir et al.

Summary: By combining DPSIR and GOF frameworks, this study conducted a comprehensive assessment of the Najafabad aquifer system in Iran, proposing scenarios to improve the aquifer's state and using technical and economic indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of management strategies. The study found that reducing groundwater exploitation and cultivated area can effectively maintain aquifer balance over the simulation period.

How much do we know about trade-offs in ecosystem services? A systematic review of empirical research observations

Kishor Aryal et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviews the trade-offs in ecosystem services over the past 16 years, revealing issues such as geographical bias, limited involvement of government institutions, and a focus on biophysical constraints rather than utility function divergence among stakeholders. It also identifies conflicting ecosystem services pairs, major drivers, and stakeholders of trade-offs, and proposes research trajectories to guide the future direction of sustainability science.

Spatial indicator of priority areas for the implementation of agroforestry systems: An optimization strategy for agricultural landscapes restoration

Gislaine Costa de Mendonca et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a spatial indicator to guide the implementation of Agroforestry Systems (AFS) in agricultural landscapes. By using a multicriteria decision analysis, different priority levels for agroforestry interventions were classified based on environmental and anthropogenic factors. Results showed that there are 22,300 hectares of land available for urgent restoration actions in 9 cities located in the Mogi Guacu River Hydrographic Basin in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Embedding circularity into the transition towards sustainable agroforestry systems in Peru

Alejandro Parodi et al.

Summary: Peru is promoting agroforestry systems to combat deforestation caused by smallholder farmers, but poor soil conservation practices and nutrient management hinder the success of this strategy. The study suggests that valorizing municipal biowaste as compost can lead to significant greenhouse gas reductions. However, the limited availability of compost and the logistical challenges of transporting it to agroforestry areas pose challenges.

Sixty-five years of forest restoration in Nepal: Lessons learned and way forward

Hari Krishna Laudari et al.

Summary: The study examines the history of forest restoration practices in Nepal, highlighting the challenges and successes. It found that early restoration efforts were limited by a lack of consideration for socio-economic and ecological factors, while later efforts were more successful due to decentralized decision making, the recognition of the multifunctionality of forest ecosystems, and the integration of socio-economic and ecological concerns.

Assay of renewable energy transition: A systematic literature review

Utsav Bhattarai et al.

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing the global clean renewable energy transition (RET) and provides a wider perspective through seven broad lenses. Developed countries lead in RET research and collaboration between rich and poor countries is necessary. Local technology promotion and demand-pull and technology-push policies are crucial for successful RET. While there is unanimous optimism regarding the future prospects of renewable energy in the electricity sector, skepticism remains for other high energy demanding areas.

Perceived importance and economic valuation of ecosystem services in Ghodaghodi wetland of Nepal

Kishor Aryal et al.

Summary: Wetlands, as one of the most productive ecosystems on earth, provide essential ecosystem services to humans and other living beings. Through a study of the Ghodaghodi Wetland in Nepal, this paper identified forest products, edible foods, and tourism as the most important services provided by the wetland. The annual net economic return from the wetland is estimated at 0.67 million US dollars, with use value accounting for 96% of the total.

Summary: The study suggests that utilizing a Payment for Ecosystem Services-based agroforestry mechanism can help address nitrate contamination in groundwater, but considerations for optimal land use allocation and sources of income are crucial in decision-making. Remediation of highly contaminated aquifers requires large-scale land conversion and a long-term time frame.
