Polystyrene Nanoplastics Inhibit the Transformation of Tetrabromobisphenol A by the Bacterium Rhodococcus jostii

Shen Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that 20 and 100 nm polystyrene NPs can inhibit the transformation of tetrabromobisphenol A by Gram-positive bacterium Rhodococcus jostii, with smaller particles exhibiting stronger inhibitory effects. PS-NPs adsorb TBBPA on their surface, reducing the bioavailable concentration for transformation, and also induce oxidative stress, affect membrane permeability, and downregulate enzyme activity.

Bioeffects of Inhaled Nanoplastics on Neurons and Alteration of Animal Behaviors through Deposition in the Brain

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nanoplastics can be deposited in the brain via nasal inhalation, leading to neurotoxicity and altered animal behavior. Smaller nanoplastics particles are more readily taken up by cells and can reach the mouse brain through aerosol inhalation.

Quantitative tracing of uptake and transport of submicrometre plastics in crop plants using lanthanide chelates as a dual-functional tracer

Yongming Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the uptake pathways and accumulation of nanoplastics in edible plants. It was found that polystyrene nanoparticles mainly accumulated in the roots of wheat and lettuce plants, with limited transfer to the shoots. Various techniques including scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were used to confirm the presence of nanoplastics in the plants.

Polystyrene Nanoplastics Toxicity to Zebrafish: Dysregulation of the Brain -Intestine-Microbiota Axis

Miaomiao Teng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of nanoplastics on the brain-gut-microbiota axis and embryo-larval development in zebrafish. The results showed that nanoplastics inhibited growth, caused inflammation, and affected intestinal permeability in zebrafish. Metabolomics analysis revealed changes in neurotransmitters and their correlation with changes in microbial groups. Furthermore, nanoplastics accumulated in the gastrointestinal tract of offspring and impaired embryo development.

Size matters: Zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model to study toxicity of nanoplastics from cells to the whole organism

M. Sendra et al.

Summary: This study used zebrafish as a model to investigate the uptake, trafficking, degradation, and genotoxicity of polystyrene nanoparticles at cellular and systemic levels. Results showed that nanoparticles mainly accumulated in the gut, leading to increased reactive oxygen species, decreased antioxidant gene expression, and induced migration of immune cells.

Size-dependent transgenerational toxicity induced by nanoplastics in nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Huanliang Liu et al.

Summary: The study compared the transgenerational toxicity of 20 nm and 100 nm polystyrene nanoparticles using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model, finding that exposure to 20 nm particles resulted in more severe toxicity than 100 nm particles due to differences in transgenerational activation of oxidative stress.

Use of the Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Mollusca, Bivalvia) as a Bioindicator of Microplastics Pollution in Freshwater Ecosystems: A Case Study from Lake Iseo (North Italy)

Paolo Pastorino et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of zebra mussels as potential bioindicators of microplastic pollution in freshwater lakes. Samples were collected from three sites at the northern end of Lake Iseo in Italy and compared for microplastic accumulation, showing a significant difference in microplastic content between the sites at different distances from a wastewater treatment plant. The findings suggest that zebra mussels could be an effective tool for monitoring microplastic pollution in lakes.

Nanoplastic-Induced Genotoxicity and Intestinal Damage in Freshwater Benthic Clams (Corbicula fluminea): Comparison with Microplastics

Zhenling Li et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoplastics preferentially trigger processes related to cellular components and induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway in various tissues, especially in indirectly contacted tissues, while microplastics induce innate immune response and activate complement and coagulation cascades. Both types of plastics can cause inflammation and epithelial damage in the intestines, and notably alter the gut microbial community structure. Unlike microplastics, the impact of nanoplastics on the intestinal microflora is limited, but it can cause more severe damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier.

A Critical Review on the Impacts of Nanoplastics and Microplastics on Aquatic and Terrestrial Photosynthetic Organisms

Camille Larue et al.

Summary: Microplastic and nanoplastic contamination is widespread and has significant impacts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems due to their toxicity towards photosynthetic organisms and potential risks for plants and consumers. Accumulation of plastic leachates and additives poses a risk for plants and consumers, and the adsorption and translocation of these particles raise concerns for trophic chain contamination. Available techniques for detection of microplastics and nanoplastics in biological samples and media are listed, along with discussions on current gaps in knowledge and future research directions.

Plastics in the Earth system

Aron Stubbins et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has become a global issue, prompting us to consider plastics as emergent geomaterials never before seen in Earth's history. With high carbon content, plastics can rival natural organic carbon in some ecosystems, prompting geochemists to include plastics in their analyses to expedite understanding of plastics in the Earth system. Furthermore, plastics can serve as global-scale tracers to advance Earth system science.
