Flotation of Iron Ores: A Review

Xiaolong Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews industrial practices and fundamental research surrounding iron ore flotation, discussing advantages and disadvantages of various flotation routes and the necessity of desliming for effective flotation. It also covers a novel stepped flotation technique for carbonate-rich iron ores, as well as a variety of reagents commonly used in flotation. The impact of zeta potential and surface chemistry on flotation and deslime is also discussed in detail.

Native plant Maireana brevifolia drives prokaryotic microbial community development in alkaline Fe ore tailings under semi-arid climatic conditions

Songlin Wu et al.

Summary: The study characterized the diversity and potential functionality of prokaryotic microbial communities in aged Fe-ore tailings and topsoils colonized by native plant species, Maireana brevifolia, in comparison with those in tailings/topsoils without plants. The presence of M. brevifolia significantly increased the diversity of prokaryotic microbial communities, particularly favoring the development of bacteria related to nitrogen cycling and organic matter degradation. The variation of microbial community was mainly explained by pH, amorphous Fe, and total N, which were regulated by M. brevifolia colonization.

Rhizosphere Drives Biotite-Like Mineral Weathering and Secondary Fe-Si Mineral Formation in Fe Ore Tailings

Songlin Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that plant root activities accelerated the weathering of biotite-like minerals in tailings, leading to the formation of numerous nanosized Fe-Si short-range-ordered (SRO) minerals and vermiculite. Among the three plant species studied, Sorghum spp. roots developed most extensively in the tailings, potentially promoting more efficient mineral weathering and secondary mineral formation compared to other plants. Overall, the research elucidated the rhizosphere effects on tailing mineral weathering and secondary Fe-Si mineral formation, highlighting the importance of pioneer plants in eco-engineering Fe ore tailings into soil.

Acidophilic Iron- and Sulfur-Oxidizing Bacteria, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Drives Alkaline pH Neutralization and Mineral Weathering in Fe Ore Tailings

Qing Yi et al.

Summary: Through a microcosm experiment, it was found that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and sulfur element interacted to rapidly neutralize alkaline Fe ore tailings; activities of A. ferrooxidans induced weathering of primary Fe-bearing minerals (e.g. biotite) and formation of secondary minerals (e.g. ferrihydrite and jarosite); the association between bacterial cells and tailings minerals was likely facilitated by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS).
