Amplified role of potential HONO sources in O3 formation in North China Plain during autumn haze aggravating processes

Jingwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Co-occurrences of high concentrations of PM2.5 and ozone (O-3) have been frequently observed in haze-aggravating processes in the North China Plain (NCP) over the past few years. The key sources of nitrous acid (HONO) enhancing O-3 during haze-aggravating processes remain unclear. This study explores the potential impact of nitrate photolysis (Phot(nitrate)) on O-3 formation and finds that it contributes significantly to the enhanced O-3 concentrations during hazy days, especially at higher altitudes.

Estimating the spatial and temporal variability of the ground-level NO2 concentration in China during 2005-2019 based on satellite remote sensing

Jianhui Xu et al.

Summary: The TSCE-NO2 model proposed in this study provides a reliable estimation of ground-level NO2 concentration in China from 2005 to 2019, revealing the seasonal and regional differences in NO2 concentration across different regions in China. Measures such as energy savings and emission reductions have alleviated NO2 pollution in China while ensuring sustained GDP growth.

Impact of weather and emission changes on NO2 concentrations in China during 2014-2019

Yang Shen et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of NO2 concentrations in China and 12 urban agglomerations, showing the anthropogenic and meteorological factors controlling the interannual variations of NO2. Different urban agglomerations exhibit different trends in NO2 interannual variations, primarily dominated by emission changes, with weather conditions also playing a significant role. The study provides basic understanding on the current situation of NO2 pollution and is helpful for policymakers and those interested in the study of tropospheric ozone changes in China and downwind areas.

Spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of ground-level nitrogen dioxide and ozone across China during 2015-2020

Yanfen Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatial and temporal distributions of NO2 and O-3 in 348 cities of China, showing higher concentrations in economically developed and densely populated regions. The concentrations of NO2 and O-3 varied from 2015 to 2020, and significantly decreased in most cities in 2020 due to COVID-19 lockdown measures.

Spatiotemporal mapping and assessment of daily ground NO2 concentrations in China using high-resolution TROPOMI retrievals

Sensen Wu et al.

Summary: The study developed a spatiotemporal regression kriging model to map daily high-resolution ground NO2 concentrations in China using TROPOMI satellite retrievals. Results showed a 14% reduction in ground NO2 concentrations during the COVID-19 period compared to 2019 and a 25% decrease in mean population exposure to ground NO2. The newly satellite-derived ground NO2 data have value in advancing environmental and health research in China.

Dynamic spatial analysis of NO2 pollution over China: Satellite observations and spatial convergence models

Yuanzheng Cui et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the differences in NO2 concentrations among different Chinese cities widened from 2005 to 2011, but have been narrowing since 2013. The convergence of NO2 pollution across cities heavily depends on the improvements in cities with high levels of NO2 concentrations, and the convergence speed is faster in winter than in summer.

Long-range transport of ozone across the eastern China seas: A case study in coastal cities in southeastern China

Yanhua Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates an ozone pollution episode in 6 cities of southeastern coastal area of China in autumn 2017, finding that ozone pollution was mainly caused by ozone transport from the Eastern China Seas. Ozone precursors emitted from Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Northeast China, and Japan-Korea were transported to the Eastern China Seas and generated ozone through photochemical reactions, affecting the southeastern coastal area after long-range transport.

ENSO modulates wildfire activity in China

Keyan Fang et al.

Summary: China is a key region for understanding fire activity and the drivers of its variability under strict fire suppression policies. A detailed fire occurrence dataset for China, the Wildfire Atlas of China (WFAC), based on continuous monitoring from multiple satellites, shows a decreasing trend in wildfires after reaching a peak in 2007. Wildfires in China are mainly influenced by factors such as low precipitation, high diurnal temperature ranges, and warm conditions that enhance evaporation.
