The nitrification recovery capacity is the key to enhancing nitrogen removal in the AOA system at low temperatures

Xinjie Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the nitrogen removal performance of AOA process at low and room temperatures. The results showed that the nitrification capacity of AOA process was recovered at low temperature and the endogenous denitrification performance was enhanced by converting the partial aerobic zone into anoxic. The activity and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) increased at low temperature, which was the key for nitrification capacity recovery. Overall, AOA system showed the possibility of advanced nitrogen removal at low temperatures.

Extremely acidic condition (pH<1.0) as a novel strategy to achieve high-efficient hydrogen sulfide removal in biotrickling filter: Biomass accumulation, sulfur oxidation pathway and microbial analysis

Tipei Jia et al.

Summary: This study investigated H2S removal and biomass variations in a biotrickling filter (BTF) under highly acidic conditions. The results showed that the BTF achieved efficient H2S removal at pH 0.5-1.0, and the enrichment of acidophilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in the acidic biofilm maintained the balance of the biofilm thickness, ensuring oxygen transfer and H2S oxidation.

Effect of pH on the performance of an acidic biotrickling filter for simultaneous removal of H2S and siloxane from biogas

Yuyao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of an acidic biotrickling filter (BTF) under different pH conditions for simultaneous removal of H2S and siloxane from biogas. The findings showed that higher removal rates of D5 were achieved under more acidic conditions, while the efficient removal of D5 was attributed to the lower partition coefficient and higher mass transfer coefficient under acidic pH conditions. Operating the BTF at pH 1.2 was found to be optimal for the simultaneous removal of H2S and siloxane.

Highly enriched anammox within anoxic biofilms by reducing suspended sludge biomass in a real-sewage A2/O process

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Effect of nitrogen loading on denitrification, denitritation and filtration performances of membrane bioreactors fed with biogenic and chemical elemental sulfur

Deniz Ucar et al.

Summary: Autotrophic denitrification using elemental sulfur (S0) as an electron donor is an effective method for nitrogen removal from contaminated waters lacking in organics. The study found that denitrification was faster with biogenic S0 (S0bio) compared to chemically synthesized S0 (S0chem), and NO2- was a more thermodynamically favorable electron acceptor than NO3-.
