Concentrations of Tire Additive Chemicals and Tire Road Wear Particles in an Australian Urban Tributary

Cassandra Rauert et al.

Summary: Tire road wear particles are a significant source of microplastics in urban environments, and they also facilitate the release of additive chemicals into the environment. Stormwater plays a major role in transporting both tire wear particles and additives to urban surface water. During severe storm events, the concentration of additives increased more than 40 times, and there was a strong correlation between the concentrations of tire wear particles and all additives.

A novel method for the quantification of tire and polymer-modified bitumen particles in environmental samples by pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectroscopy

Elisabeth S. Rodland et al.

Summary: A new methodology using pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry has been introduced to improve the analysis of tire and road wear particles. This method provides good recoveries for both simple and complex matrices, and has been successfully applied to urban snow, road-side soil and gully-pot sediment samples for quantifying tire and road wear particles.

Occurrence of tire and road wear particles in urban and peri-urban snowbanks, and their potential environmental implications

Elisabeth S. Rodland et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that tire and road wear particles are major sources of microplastic contamination. There is a wide variation in the mass concentrations and snow mass loads of these particles in snow. Contrary to previous findings, the speed limit is found to be a key variable impacting the mass concentrations. The presence of large amounts of suspended solids in roadside snow highlights the need for treatment before release into the environment.

An audit of microplastic abundance throughout three Australian wastewater treatment plants

Shima Ziajahromi et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are important pathways for microplastics to enter the environment, with the majority of microplastics retained in sludge. Limited information on microplastics in Australian sludge and biosolids warrants further research. This study shows that most microplastics are intercepted and transported to landfills during the treatment process, making landfills potential important sinks (and future sources) of microplastics.

Evaluation of microplastics removal efficiency at a wastewater treatment plant discharging to the Sea of Marmara

Suat Vardar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the levels, composition, and fate of microplastics at a secondary wastewater treatment plant in Istanbul, Turkey. Fibers were found to be the most dominant particles, followed by hard fragments. The removal efficiency varied for different sizes and shapes of particles, with a considerable amount of microplastics still being released into the Sea of Marmara despite high removal rates at the treatment plant.

Cassandra Rauert et al.

Summary: Environmental monitoring data on tire road wear particles are limited due to challenges in quantification. A study on commercially available tires from Australia and Norway found that synthetic rubber content varied significantly among different brands and models, suggesting the need for refinement of the ISO method and large-scale analysis of commercial tire treads.

Application of GCMS-pyrolysis to estimate the levels of microplastics in a drinking water supply system

Alessio Gomiero et al.

Summary: Communities prioritize safe drinking water, but even in remote areas microplastic fragments have been confirmed. A study in a Norwegian urban area found varying levels of polymers in drinking water, with polyethylene, polyamide, and polyester being the most frequently detected types. The presence and distribution of microplastics in raw water can impact the drinking water supply network.

Plastics in biosolids from 1950 to 2016: A function of global plastic production and consumption

Elvis D. Okoffo et al.

Summary: The study found a correlation between the concentration of plastics in treated sewage sludge and plastic production estimates, indicating a potential link between plastics production, consumption, and leakage into the environment. Prior to the 1990s, there was limited plastic leakage into biosolids, except for polystyrene, but increased leakage was observed from the 1990s onwards.

Plastic particles in soil: state of the knowledge on sources, occurrence and distribution, analytical methods and ecological impacts

Elvis D. Okoffo et al.

Summary: The increased production and use of plastics have led to a rise in plastic debris accumulating in the environment, with potential fragmentation into smaller pieces defined as microplastics and nanoplastics. Studies have focused on the occurrence and hazards of plastic particles in aquatic environments, but less is known about plastic particles in terrestrial environments, including accumulation in soils, sources, impacts, and analytical techniques. This review provides a comprehensive overview of plastic pollution in soil, highlighting known sources, distribution, analytical techniques, ecological impacts, and areas for future research.
