Status and changes of water quality in typical near-city zones of three East African Great Lakes in Tanzania

Qiushi Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of water quality in three transboundary East African Great Lakes. The results showed that nutrient pollution was severe in certain areas of Lake Victoria, while Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa had relatively good water quality. The study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring and further research in the lakes and their basins.

Influencing mechanism of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation strategies of livestock sector in developed regions of eastern China: a case study of Jiangsu province

Chuanhe Xiong et al.

Summary: This study focuses on non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock sector in Jiangsu province, China. By analyzing influencing factors and improving the model, the study identified that the key area for emissions reduction is the proper treatment of livestock manure. Additionally, decreasing the agricultural population, increasing livestock carbon productivity, and improving livestock output value per capita of the agricultural population were found to reduce emissions. Constructing and improving the low carbon industrial chain, as well as promoting research and development and introduction of low carbon technology, were highlighted as two main focuses for emissions reduction.

Exploring river nitrogen and phosphorus loading and export to global coastal waters in the Shared Socio-economic pathways

A. H. W. Beusen et al.

Summary: The analysis revealed that more efforts are needed to slow down the declining trend of global nutrient cycles, particularly with agriculture, human sewage, and aquaculture becoming dominant factors. The increasing N:P ratios may lead to harmful algal blooms, indicating the necessity of a balanced management system for both N and P in all systems.

Spatial differentiation identification of influencing factors of agricultural carbon productivity at city level in Taihu lake basin, China

Chuanhe Xiong et al.

Summary: This study identified significant spatial differentiation of agricultural carbon productivity at the city level in the Taihu lake basin, with different echelons based on productivity levels. It also found a synergetic evolution law between agricultural carbon productivity and agricultural economy, highlighting the importance of economic development level in influencing carbon productivity. Additionally, there were notable differences in the influencing factors of agricultural carbon productivity at the city level.

Selecting low-carbon technologies and measures for high agricultural carbon productivity in Taihu Lake Basin, China

Chuanhe Xiong et al.

Summary: The Delphi method was used to evaluate low-carbon technologies for high agricultural carbon productivity in the Taihu Lake Basin. The study identified a final list of technologies and measures tailored to local conditions, providing decision-making reference for formulating agricultural carbon emission reduction technology system and low-carbon agricultural development planning. This final list can also be considered a priority for promoting agricultural low-carbon technologies and measures in China and globally.

Quantification of global and national nitrogen budgets for crop production

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Input-output estimates of nitrogen on cropland are essential for improving nitrogen management and understanding the global nitrogen cycle. While most datasets show similar patterns, some annual estimates vary widely, leading to large ranges of uncertainty. The comparison of nitrogen budget terms by country reveals areas for improvement.
