Vegetation restoration facilitates belowground microbial network complexity and recalcitrant soil organic carbon storage in southwest China karst region

Linan Hu et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important component of soil ecosystems, and understanding its interaction with soil microbial community is crucial for predicting carbon fate in soils following vegetation restoration. In this study, high-throughput sequencing and spectroscopy analysis were used to characterize SOC compounds and elucidate associated microbial community. The results showed that SOC, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, microbial biomass, dissolved organic carbon, available potassium, calcium, and soil moisture increased significantly with vegetation restoration. The abundance of certain carbon compounds and the dominant phyla of microorganisms were strongly related to SOC. The composition and assembly mechanisms of bacterial and fungal communities varied along the vegetation restoration chronosequence. Certain keystone genera and functional groups were identified in the microbial community, which were associated with enhanced recalcitrant SOC storage. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into microbe response and the impact of microbes on SOC storage in vegetation restoration processes.

Effects of biofertilizer on soil microbial diversity and antibiotic resistance genes

Le-Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Spread of antibiotic resistance is a recognized global threat to human health. While studies have shown that application of organic fertilizers may increase the risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the impact of biofertilizers on resistance genes is not well understood. This study used high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR) to investigate the effect of biofertilizer application on soil ARGs in three orchards in China. The results showed that biofertilizer application altered the diversity of soil bacteria and fungi, but did not significantly change the relative abundance of ARGs in the soil. Soil properties indirectly affected ARGs through bacterial diversity, while bacterial abundance directly affected ARGs.

Blue carbon stocks, accumulation rates, and associated spatial variability in Brazilian mangroves

Vanessa Hatje et al.

Summary: The study found that salinity gradient has a less significant impact on the distribution of organic carbon and nitrogen stocks in mangrove soils, while there is greater variability along the intertidal gradient. In Brazil, the C-org storage in the upper meter of soils accounts for 3-8% of the carbon stored in mangrove soils globally.

Human disturbance drives loss of soil organic matter and changes its stability and sources in mangroves

Mauricio Santos-Andrade et al.

Summary: Conversion of mangroves to shrimp ponds resulted in severe changes in soil properties, organic matter stability and Corg characteristics. Shrimp pond soils contained the lowest OM-Corg pools, consisting mostly of stable OM, while control mangrove soils had the largest OM-Corg pools consisting of unstable OM.

Both environmental and spatial variables affect bacterial functional diversity in mangrove sediments at an island scale

Haihua Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the functional diversity of bacterial communities in mangroves on Hainan Island is influenced by various factors, including spatial and environmental factors. There are context-dependent differences in metabolic activity and functional diversity among different sites, and total carbon, nitrite nitrogen, and salinity are important environmental factors. Moreover, spatial variables play a significant role in determining bacterial functional diversity, providing new insights into studying bacterial biogeographic patterns and impacts on sediment-associated function.

Cyanobacterial Potential for Restoration of Loess Surfaces through Artificially Induced Biocrusts

Tamara Palanacki Malesevic et al.

Summary: Loess, a highly porous and easily erosive aeolian sediment covering about 10% of the Earth's surface, poses environmental challenges. This study aims to assess the potential of cyanobacteria for restoring exposed loess surfaces through the development of biological loess crusts. The findings confirm that cyanobacteria can interact with loess particles to stabilize the sediment.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Effects of tidal influence on the structure and function of prokaryotic communities in the sediments of a pristine Brazilian mangrove

Carolina Oliveira de Santana et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in different tidal zones of pristine mangroves exhibit significant diversity and distinct nutrient-cycling functions, influenced mainly by salinity and organic matter. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi are the predominant bacterial phyla, while Crenarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota are the main archaeal phyla across all zones. Bacillaceae family plays a crucial role in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling in the mangrove ecosystem.
