Characteristics of airborne particles retained on conifer needles across China in winter and preliminary evaluation of the capacity of trees in haze mitigation

Zhiguo Cao et al.

Summary: Study on needle samples collected from 78 parks and campuses in 31 cities of China revealed significant spatial variation in particulate matter (PM) retained on plant leaves (PMR), with water-soluble components accounting for 52.3% of PMR on average, where WSIS and WSOM contributed 21.4% and 30.9% to PMR respectively. The results suggest that trees can effectively remove fine particles from the air and play a significant role in mitigating haze pollution.

Mortality Attributable to Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Fine Particulate Matter: Insights from the Epidemiologic Evidence for Understudied Locations

Kyle J. Colonna et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to ambient fine particles (PM2.5) is associated with mortality, although the extrapolation of results to understudied locations may involve uncertainty. Causation is supported, and the composition of PM2.5 and population characteristics can alter the effect.

Assessment of the ability of roadside vegetation to remove particulate matter from the urban air

B. Konczak et al.

Summary: The rapid development of urbanized areas and transportation infrastructure has led to deteriorating air quality, with dust pollution posing a threat to human health. The analysis of elemental composition of PM stored on leaf surfaces, including high concentrations of heavy metals, highlights the importance of trees in phytoremediation of air pollution.

Contribution of PM2.5-Pb in atmospheric fallout to Pb accumulation in Chinese cabbage leaves via stomata

Pei-Pei Gao et al.

Summary: A field experiment was conducted to explore the foliar uptake of Pb in Chinese cabbage exposed to atmospheric fallout. It was found that the major source of Pb in cabbage leaves was PM2.5, with high-Pb-accumulation cabbage trapping more PM2.5-Pb and accumulating more Pb.

Individual effects of trichomes and leaf morphology on PM2.5 dry deposition velocity: A variable-control approach using species from the same family or genus

Xuyi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of leaf morphological characteristics on PM2.5 dry deposition velocity using a control-variable approach. The results showed that leaf trichomes had a positive effect on PM2.5 dry deposition velocity, and a higher trichome density led to greater particle deposition velocity.

Sodium accumulation has minimal effect on metabolite profile of onion bulbs

M. L. Romo-Perez et al.

Summary: The study found that onion plants have the ability to exclude Na+ after moderate Na2SO4 treatment, foliar application does not lead to Na+ accumulation in the bulbs, while soil application results in Na+ accumulation in the leaves and bulbs, with no significant impact on the metabolite profile of onions.

Comparing i-Tree Eco Estimates of Particulate Matter Deposition with Leaf and Canopy Measurements in an Urban Mediterranean Holm Oak Forest

Rocco Pace et al.

Summary: The study validated i-Tree Eco's PM2.5 deposition calculations by comparing them with experimental data, showing good overall agreement in fluxes between the model and measurements. Net deposition mainly occurred in the first part of the day when atmospheric PM concentration was higher, followed by increased resuspension rates in the second part of the day with higher wind speeds. Sensitivity analysis of model parameters indicated that better representation of PM deposition fluxes could be achieved through adjusted deposition velocities.

Effect of forest floor fuel moisture content on chemical components of PM2.5 emitted during combustion

Yuanfan Ma et al.

Summary: The moisture content of forest floor fuels has a significant impact on the emissions of pollutants and water-soluble ions during forest fires. Coniferous species emit more pollutants than broadleaved species, and the combustion of leaf samples emits more carbonaceous components and water-soluble ions than branches. Fuel moisture content affects the inorganic salt composition in the emitted particulate matter.

Summary: This study established a multi-cycle PM removal model to analyze the impact of wind speed and precipitation on the PM filtration function of plants. It found that the PM removal performance of plants varied under different climate conditions, and proposed guidance for creating green spaces for PM control in different climates.

Xiaolu Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the PM retention abilities of ten common tree species in Hangzhou, China, and found that Platanus acerifolia and Sapindus mukorossi had strong abilities to retain particulates. The study also revealed significant correlations between leaf microstructure and PM retention.
