The covariation of Ce/Ce* values with the size of the first tetrad effect and the inheritance of Eu anomalies from the bedrock, as well as the variation in Eu/Eu* values related to plagioclase dissolution, are observed throughout the profile.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution, fractionation and potential risks of heavy metals in soils from a mountainous area with black shale outcropping, with emphasis on Cd and Zn. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in black shales reflected high geochemical baseline in the study area. Metals released from oxidative weathering were redistributed and retained during pedogenic processes, leading to enrichment of certain metals in soils.

Summary: Limited information is available on the health risks of heavy metals in tea plantation soils, especially the specific sources of contamination. This study used ICP-MS to analyze HMs in tea leaves and topsoil samples. Agricultural activities and natural sources were found to be the main contributors to the non-carcinogenic risks for adults, with Co and Cr being major contributors to non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in tea leaves, respectively.

Geogenic enrichment of potentially toxic metals in agricultural soils derived from black shale in northwest Zhejiang, China: Pathways to and risks from associated crops

Summary: Agricultural soils derived from black shale are enriched in potentially toxic metals, especially Cd, posing a high potential ecological risk. Cd in soils had high mobility and bioavailability, while Pb was mostly retained in the residual fraction, indicating low mobility. This study provides a scientific basis for developing suitable management strategies to mitigate the exposure to potentially toxic metals in high risk areas.
