Modeling plant uptake of organic contaminants by root vegetables: The role of diffusion, xylem, and phloem uptake routes

Zijian Li

Summary: The uptake of organic contaminants by root vegetables involves diffusion, transport, degradation, and volatilization. The uptake routes and elimination routes play a crucial role in the bioconcentration modeling of organic contaminants. A two-compartment uptake model was proposed to examine these routes. The results showed that the log BCF values of chemicals in the root compartment remained within a narrow range for low log KOW values, while the log BCF values decreased rapidly with increasing log KOW values. The leaf compartment had the highest log BCF values for chemicals with moderate lipophilicity. The surface-deposition route for pesticides was found to be important for lipophilic compounds. Future studies should focus on plant physiology and environmental conditions to improve the plant uptake model.

Molecular Docking and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies of Triterpenes from Vernonia patula with the Cannabinoid Type 1 Receptor

Md Afjalus Siraj et al.

Summary: The molecular docking approach revealed that friedelin and alpha-amyrin had the strongest binding affinity towards CB1 and engaged in stable non-bonding interactions close to the active site. The triterpenes studied demonstrated good capacity to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, supporting the antinociceptive and sedative properties of Vernonia patula.

Electrophysiological study of Arabidopsis ABCB4 and PIN2 auxin transporters: Evidence of auxin activation and interaction enhancing auxin selectivity

Stephen D. Deslauriers et al.

Summary: The study found that the permeability of ABCB4 and PIN2 to auxin anions significantly increased when expressed outside of cells; the synergistic effect between the two may be essential for generating asymmetric auxin efflux; auxin can also stimulate ABCB4 activity, contributing to a self-reinforcement of auxin transport.

ABCG transporter proteins with beneficial activity on plants

Anindita Dhara et al.

Summary: The ABC-G subfamily of ABC transporters plays a crucial role in plant responses to environmental stresses and pathogen attacks, especially in regulating water transpiration, exporting biotic stress-induced hormones, and providing resistance to heavy metals. They act as the first line of defense for plants.

An ABCC-type transporter endowing glyphosate resistance in plants

Lang Pan et al.

Summary: Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide globally, has led to the evolution of resistance in many weed species. A study identified an ATP-binding cassette transporter, EcABCC8, that confers glyphosate resistance when expressed in transgenic rice. This transporter likely effluxes glyphosate in a plasma membrane-localized manner, reducing cellular glyphosate levels.

Proton-coupled cotransporter involves phenanthrene xylem loading in roots

Yu Shen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the concentration dependence of phenanthrene xylem loading and the impact of metabolic inhibitors, temperature, and dissolved oxygen on the phenanthrene concentration in xylem sap. It suggests that H+/phenanthrene cotransporter is involved in phenanthrene loading into xylem and offers a valuable model to understand the mechanism of PAH loading into xylem.

Early stages of legume-rhizobia symbiosis are controlled by ABCG-mediated transport of active cytokinins

Karolina Jarzyniak et al.

Summary: Growing evidence shows the essential role of plant hormone cytokinins (CKs) in nitrogen-fixing symbiosis, with ABC transporter ABCG56 playing a crucial role in the early nodulation stages by exporting bioactive CKs in an ATP-dependent manner. Disruption of ABCG-mediated cytokinin transport impairs nodulation, highlighting the importance of this process in the establishment of N-fixing nodules.
