Cadmium long-term immobilization by biochar and potential risks in soils with different pH under combined aging

Zhuowen Meng et al.

Summary: This study quantified the long-term immobilization of Cd by biochar and its potential risk in soils with different pH levels under a simulated aging process. The results showed that biochars had a positive effect on Cd immobilization in acidic and neutral soils, but had negative effects in alkaline soil.

Summary: Field experiments showed that both ordinary biochar and PEI modified biochar could effectively remediate Cd-contaminated soil, improve soil quality, and passivate Cd in soil. Compared to ordinary biochar, PEI modified biochar demonstrated a more significant passivation effect on Cd in soil.

Remediation effect of mercapto-palygorskite combined with manganese sulfate on cadmium contaminated alkaline soil and cadmium accumulation in pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.)

Yingying Yong et al.

Summary: Cadmium pollution in alkaline soil in some areas of northern China seriously threatens agricultural production and human health. There is a lack of materials and methods for remediating cadmium pollution in alkaline soil, so it is necessary to further study economic and adaptive remediation and regulation techniques for cadmium pollution in alkaline soil.

Biochar decreases Cd mobility and rice (Oryza sativa L.) uptake by affecting soil iron and sulfur cycling

Jingbo Wang et al.

Summary: The use of rice straw and rape straw biochars can effectively reduce the concentration of cadmium in soil and decrease its uptake by rice plants. Rape straw biochar is more effective in reducing cadmium concentration in rice roots and improving soil properties. Biochar also prevents the transportation of cadmium from soil to rice roots by forming iron plaques.

Mitigating the accumulation of arsenic and cadmium in rice grain: A quantitative review of the role of water management

Daniela R. Carrijo et al.

Summary: Exposure to arsenic through rice consumption is a growing concern. Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) irrigation practices can reduce arsenic accumulation in grain, but may increase cadmium levels. The severity of soil drying during AWD and the timing of AWD implementation are important factors affecting the accumulation of arsenic and cadmium in rice grain.

Iron-modified biochar and water management regime-induced changes in plant growth, enzyme activities, and phytoavailability of arsenic, cadmium and lead in a paddy soil

Ergang Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that FeBC effectively reduced the bioavailability of As and Pb in paddy soils, while RawBC was more suitable for reducing the bioavailability of Cd. In addition, FeBC treatment not only increased rice yield, but also had a certain impact on soil enzyme activity.

Two-year and multi-site field trials to evaluate soil amendments for controlling cadmium accumulation in rice grain

Xu Fang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that applying MnO2 or MB alone to acidic soils can effectively reduce Cd concentrations in rice grain, with interactions between MnO2 and limestone enhancing these effects. Addition of MB reduces grain Cd concentrations by increasing extractable and dissolved Mn concentrations in soil.

Wheat and maize-derived water-washed and unwashed biochar improved the nutrients phytoavailability and the grain and straw yield of rice and wheat: A field trial for sustainable management of paddy soils

Punhoon Khan Korai et al.

Summary: The study found that adding biochar, especially wheat raw biochar, significantly increased rice yield and the availability and content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in plants. Additionally, the availability and content of iron, manganese, zinc, and copper in rice and wheat grains and straw also significantly increased. However, the water-washing process altered the properties of biochar, particularly the water-extractable carbon, decreasing its efficiency.

Strategies for reducing cadmium accumulation in rice grains

Babar Hussain et al.

Summary: The high concentration of toxic heavy metal cadmium in paddy soils and its subsequent accumulation in rice grains and the food chain is a global environmental issue. Understanding the soil properties that affect the uptake and translocation of Cd in rice can help reduce its accumulation in grains. While various management practices exist to remediate Cd from contaminated soil, practical application is limited. Controlling soil pH and redox potential can reduce the translocation of Cd from soil to rice roots, and developing genotypes restricting Cd uptake can reduce its accumulation in rice grains.
