Freezing-low temperature treatment facilitates short-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge with short-term fermentation

Zhang-Wei He et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel and high-efficiency strategy, freezing followed by low-temperature thermal treatment, to significantly promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge. The maximal production of SCFAs was achieved with a shortened retention time, and the potential carbon source recovery was increased compared to traditional freezing/thawing treatment. Additionally, the strategy accelerated the solubilization and hydrolysis steps of the sludge and enriched acid-producing microorganisms.

Calcium ions-effect on performance, growth and extracellular nature of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis system treating wastewater

Cong-Cong Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of calcium ions on microalgae harvesting and wastewater treatment in a microalgal-bacterial symbiosis (MAPS) system. The results showed that low levels of calcium ions promoted the removal of COD and nutrients, while high levels of calcium ions caused a reduction in removal rates. Mechanism analysis revealed that the presence of calcium ions improved extracellular secretions, enhanced flocculation performance, and decreased the dispersibility of microalgae cells through electrical neutralization.

Role and significance of water and acid washing on biochar for regulating methane production from waste activated sludge

Hong-Yu Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of water and acid washing on biochar (BC) on methane production. The results showed that water and acid washing could enhance methane production in wood-based BC, but had little effect on straw-based BC. Water and acid washing increased electron transfer functional groups in wood-based BC, promoting the enrichment of electron-active microorganisms and shifting the predominant pathway for methane production.

Role and significance of co-additive of biochar and nano-magnetite on methane production from waste activated sludge: Non-synergistic rather than synergistic effects

Hong-Yu Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of co-additive of biochar (BC) and nano-magnetite (NM) on anaerobic digestion and found that there were no synergistic effects. Methane production decreased by 24.7% and 38.3% in the simultaneous co-additive strategy, while it was slightly higher in the stepwise additive strategies compared to BC alone but lower than NM alone. Mechanism studies suggested that BC adsorbed soluble organics, reducing available substrates for methanogens.
