Emergent Constraints on Future Expansion of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool

In-Hong Park et al.

Summary: The latest climate models can realistically simulate the current climate in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) area, but there are significant differences in future projections among different models. A strong negative relationship between the present-day IPWP area and its future change is identified, and using this relationship can greatly reduce the spread of future projections compared to the raw projections. This constraint is determined by the skewed distribution of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and a negative SST-shortwave radiation feedback in the western Pacific, leading to a larger IPWP expansion in models with a smaller IPWP area currently. This result emphasizes the importance of accurately simulating the IPWP area in the present-day climate for reliable future predictions of tropical climate.

Source apportionment of black carbon using light absorption measurement and impact of biomass burning smoke on air quality over rural central Taiwan: A yearlong study

Yu-Hsiang Cheng et al.

Summary: Biomass burning episodes are critical PM issues in Taiwan, with fossil fuel combustion being the main source of black carbon. However, biomass burning also affects PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations at monitoring locations. Further research is needed to understand the impact of biomass burning events on residents' health.

Source apportionment of marine atmospheric aerosols in northern South China Sea during summertime 2018

Baoling Liang et al.

Summary: Marine atmospheric aerosols play important roles in global radiation balance and climate change. This study conducted ship-based measurements in the northern South China Sea during summer 2018 and found that non-refractory submicron particulate matter had a mean concentration of 9.11 +/- 4.86 mu g m(-3), with sulfate being the most abundant component. Positive matrix factorization analysis identified ship emissions as the most significant source of submicron particles.

Large contribution of biomass burning emissions to ozone throughout the global remote troposphere

Summary: Ozone, an important greenhouse gas, has negative impacts on human and ecosystem health. Biomass burning and urban emissions are significant sources of ozone precursors. Research indicates that the influence of biomass burning on tropospheric ozone is underestimated.

Spectral absorption properties of organic carbon aerosol during a polluted winter in Beijing, China

Summary: The study estimated the absorption coefficient of organic carbon (OC) in Beijing during a polluted winter, finding that the absorption properties of OC are influenced by the coating thickness and wavelength of black carbon. The mass absorption efficiency of OC significantly decreased as wavelength increased.

Investigation of Black Carbon characteristics over southern ocean: Contribution of fossil fuel and biomass burning

Rohit Srivastava et al.

Summary: The study investigated the variation of black carbon (BC) mass concentration and its contributions from fossil fuel and biomass burning in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean during the austral summer. The research found that fossil fuel was the dominant contributor to BC, accounting for over 80% in half of the observations, while biomass burning contributed to around one fifth.

Summary: The study aims to improve the chemical weather prediction capability of models in northern peninsular Southeast Asia, and finds that the inaccuracies in simulations are mainly caused by the vertical distribution and rise module of biomass burning plumes.
