Prediction of high-risk areas of soil heavy metal pollution with multiple factors on a large scale in industrial agglomeration areas

Zhaoyue Liu et al.

Summary: Industrialization has increased the risk of heavy metal pollution in soil. This study explored the factors and interactions affecting the distribution of heavy metals in a typical area, and predicted high-risk areas of heavy metal pollution in the Xiangjiang River basin. High-risk areas were primarily concentrated in the upper and middle reaches, with significant overlapping of multiple heavy metals in certain regions.

Chromium biogeochemical behaviour in soil-plant systems and remediation strategies: A critical review

Ming Ao et al.

Summary: This review explores the mechanisms of chromium uptake, transport, and accumulation in soil-plant systems to reduce its toxicity and ecological risk, focusing on recent advancements from 2017 to 2021. It also highlights the reduction and immobilization mechanisms using organic and inorganic reductants for Cr(VI) remediation in contaminated soils, as well as research challenges and potential prospects in the biogeochemical behavior of chromium in soil-plant systems and its environmental impacts.

Modeling and visualizing the transport and retention of cationic and oxyanionic metals (Cd and Cr) in saturated soil under various hydrochemical and hydrodynamic conditions

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the comparative transport behaviors of Cd2+ and CrO42- in water-saturated soil columns under different hydrochemical and hydraulic conditions. The results showed that high solution pH inhibited the transport of Cd(II), while the migration of Cr(VI) was promoted at high pH. The increase in ionic strength and flow rate also affected the transport of both metals.

Natural source of Cr(VI) in soil: The anoxic oxidation of Cr(III) by Mn oxides

Ming Ao et al.

Summary: Cr(VI) in soils and groundwater is primarily derived from the oxidation of geogenic Cr(III) minerals rather than direct emissions. The oxidation of Cr(III) is mainly facilitated by Mn oxides in anoxic soils and by O-2 in oxic soils. The presence of Mn oxides promotes the oxidative dissolution of chromite even under anoxic conditions. The form of Cr, the abundance of Mn oxides, and the presence of reducing agents control the content of Cr(VI) in soil.

Characteristics and controls of solute transport under different conditions of soil texture and vegetation type in the waterewind erosion crisscross region of China's Loess Plateau

Yanwu Pei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the transport characteristics of Cl- in soils with different textures and vegetation types. Results showed that soil texture, vegetation type, and depth significantly influenced the transport characteristics of Cl-, with varying root biomass distributions affecting macropore numbers and preferential flow paths in soil. This research provides guidance for optimizing artificial vegetation configuration to reduce nutrient loss and enhance ecosystem functions in the northern Loess Plateau of China.

Migration and transformation of chromium in unsaturated soil during groundwater table fluctuations induced by rainfall

Yaqiang Wei et al.

Summary: The fluctuation of groundwater table plays a significant role in the reduction of Cr(VI) in the lower soil layer, and the rise in water level leads to an increase in Cr(III) concentration. The hydrodynamic conditions impact the redox environment of soil, affecting the transformation and transport of Cr.
