Source identification and global implications of black carbon

Erika P. Blanco-Donado et al.

Summary: This study measured the black carbon (BC) concentration in the industrialized urban area of Barranquilla, Colombia, using both mobile and ambient monitoring. The results showed that vehicle traffic emissions were the primary source of BC, although biomass burning also had an influence. The concentration of BC was most affected by vehicle emissions and traffic congestion caused by road and transport infrastructure.

Efficient alkane oxidation under combustion engine and atmospheric conditions

Zhandong Wang et al.

Summary: Conventional wisdom suggested that only organic compounds with double bonds or oxygen-containing moieties could efficiently undergo autoxidation, but recent research has shown significant autoxidation of alkanes under both atmospheric and combustion conditions. The study demonstrates that even at high concentrations of NOX, C-6-C-10 alkanes can produce considerable amounts of highly oxygenated products that contribute to urban organic aerosol, challenging previous beliefs about the susceptibility of alkanes to extensive autoxidation.

Variations in Black Carbon concentration and sources during COVID-19 lockdown in Delhi

Vikas Goel et al.

Summary: A nationwide lockdown imposed in India due to COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a significant reduction in Black Carbon (BC) concentration in Delhi, with fossil fuel burning identified as the dominant source. The gradual relaxation of lockdown measures led to an increase in BCff contribution, while local emission sources remained the main contributors to BC concentration in Delhi.

Black Carbon Emission Reduction Due to COVID-19 Lockdown in China

Mengwei Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that during the Lunar New Year Holiday of 2020, China's lockdown led to a 70% reduction in black carbon emissions. In northern China, black carbon concentrations unexpectedly increased by 29% in the first week of lockdown, despite a decrease in emissions; whereas in eastern China, black carbon emissions sharply decreased in the first week and recovered in sync with the end of the lockdown.

Premature Mortality Associated with Exposure to Outdoor Black Carbon and Its Source Contributions in China

Yiyi Wang et al.

Summary: Epidemiological studies have shown that outdoor black carbon (BC) presents higher health risks than other constituents and the total fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This study estimated the premature mortality attributed to BC in China in 2013, with a focus on different source sectors and regional variations. The results indicated that reducing BC emissions from industrial and transportation sources in China could lead to significant health benefits, particularly in provinces with high emissions and dense populations.
