Underground production of 81Kr detected in subsurface fluids

R. Purtschert et al.

Summary: Using radiokrypton dating with the long-lived natural isotope Kr-81, researchers determined the age of ancient groundwater in South Africa. Surprisingly, underground production of Kr-81 was detected, contrary to the long-held paradigm. A radionuclide production and release model was proposed to quantify factors affecting Kr-81 concentrations in groundwater.

Controls on the 36Cl/Cl input ratio of paleo-groundwater in arid environments: New evidence from 81Kr/Kr data

Roi Ram et al.

Summary: Measurements of Kr-81 and Cl-36 radioisotopes in groundwater from the Negev Desert were used to assess the Cl-36/Cl input ratios and Cl- contents for paleorecharge into the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer. The study found a stable initial Cl-36/Cl ratio for groundwater replenishment in the Negev Desert and highlighted the importance of integrating Kr-81 age information in evaluating the Cl-36 system for dating purposes in a given basin.

Origin of water masses in Floridan Aquifer System revealed by 81Kr

Reika Yokochi et al.

Summary: Groundwater in coastal aquifers is a crucial resource but at risk of salinization due to hydrological connections with the ocean. Accurate hydrological characterization is vital for water resource management and understanding solute flux. Tracer-based studies in the Floridan Aquifer System provide valuable insights into the past and present dynamics of groundwater in this productive aquifer.
