Occurrence of antibiotics and bacterial resistance genes in wastewater: resistance mechanisms and antimicrobial resistance control approaches

Christopher Mutuku et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial pharmaceuticals are considered as emergent micropollutants that can have significant eco-toxicological effects even at low concentrations. The lack of standardized regulations for monitoring antibiotic content in environmental water quality standards leads to the indiscriminate discharge of antimicrobials into urban wastewater treatment facilities. This can result in the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria and potential health consequences. The emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria in untreated hospital effluents and wastewater treatment plants is linked to continuous exposure to antimicrobials. Understanding the correlation between environmental exposure to antibiotics and the evolution and spread of resistant bacteria is crucial for formulating mitigation measures.

N and S co-doping of TiO2@C derived from in situ oxidation of Ti3C2 MXene for efficient persulfate activation and sulfamethoxazole degradation under visible light

Shuyi Shen et al.

Summary: Visible-light-driven photocatalysts with synergistic persulfate (PS) activation and photocatalysis have great potential in pollution control. In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped TiO2@C hybrid (N/S-TiO2@C) was synthesized and showed enhanced PS activation and photocatalysis under visible light. The N/S-TiO2@C catalyst achieved complete degradation and mineralization of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and outperformed PS, N-TiO2@C, and S-TiO2@C alone. The reactive species SO4 center dot-, O-1(2), (OH)-O-center dot, and O-2(center dot-) were determined to dominate the SMZ degradation. N/S-TiO2@C also showed excellent performance in real water samples. The results highlight the stability and potential application of N/S-TiO2@C as a PS activator for organic wastewater treatment.
